Rachid graduated from high school in Sousse, Tunisia at the lycée de garçon de Sousse. He studied hotel and tourism management at the Institute d’Hotellerie et du Tourism in Sidi Dhrif, Tunisia and later earned his degree in hotel management at Cornell University in1969, where he and Lydia met.

He worked in the hospitality industry in New York City as auditor and manager for 37 years. Most of his career was spent at the Omni Berkshire Hotel.

Having the gift of creativity, Rachid loved to develop his talents in the areas of: gardening, cooking, photography, and crafting, especially with gourds grown from his garden. He was a lover of travel, music, and dance and spent much of his spare time communicating with family and friends on Facebook, where he loved to send pictures of his family, friends, and his experiences and activities. He was a fan of sports, especially soccer, which he played in Tunisia on the national soccer team in Sousse. He passed down his passion and skills to both of his daughters.

Rachid was a supporter of the Hackettstown Committee for Crime Prevention (HCCP) and Teen Nights held at the Hackettstown Middle School and the Hackettstown Community Pool.

Surviving in addition to his wife, Lydia Ann, are a daughter, Rachel Ghachem Sutton, and her husband Jack, of Milford, PA and a daughter, Noreen Ghachem and her wife, Elena Maucere, of Ewing, NJ. He is also survived by two grandchildren, Jessica and Eric Sutton.

I was so sorry to hear about the loss of your father. Reading the comments above, he sounds like a wonderful man who was respected and liked by all. It also sounds like this was unexpected and sudden. I know that kind of loss since both my parents died suddenly and unexpectedly. For those of us left behind it is truly heartbreaking but for the person, it is a blessing that the pain and suffering was minimal. My thoughts and prayers will be with you and your family. Park Ca

We were greatly saddened by unexpectedly quick disappearance of Rachid Ghachem, a loving husband, father and friendly relative. This cheerful person, with a strong character and great diligence, has always been kind to others. His sunny smile warmed and inspired positive communication. He respected his past and cherished the Tunisian culture. He was an active blogger and through Facebook generously shared the sights of Tunisia and the USA with his numerous friends. His gardening success amazed people. On his photos large pumpkins, peppers and bright ripe tomatoes delighted the eye and inspired other amateur gardeners. In his life, a great place was occupied by work and family, so when he retired, he devoted much time to his family and hobbies. Saying goodbye to Rachid, we leave in our memory all the best that he left to all of his closest and dearest. We thank him for his contribution to the development and promotion of people's diplomacy between Tunisia and the United States. We thank him for the fact that he met us on our way and enriched us with his presence. Let the memory of him live! We will preserve his image in our souls.

Rachid was my friend for almost fifty years, especially after he married Lydia Ann. He was a wonderfully warm person who is and will be greatly missed. His sense of humor lightened up all our visits, and we had looked forward to many years of fun together. We are crushed by his sudden and unexpected passing.
