Douglas C. Paul

Douglas Campbell Paul died peacefully February 16 in Hackettstown, NJ he was 96. His family provided the following.

Doug was born October 5, 1918 in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. He attended Bethlehem public schools, Mercersburg Academy (’36) in Mercersburg, Pa and Lehigh University (‘40) where he majored in engineering. At Lehigh, Doug was a member of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity and the ROTC. After graduation he went to Europe to serve in WWII. He was a First Lieutenant in the 28th Infantry Division stationed in England and landed in Normandy on D+56. He was active in the Battle of the Bulge and the liberation of Paris. Doug was awarded the Bronze Star, Silver Star and Purple Heart for his duty in the armed forces.

After leaving the Army he worked for the Bethlehem Steel Co. for three years. In 1947 his father, Herbert asked Doug to join him in his office furniture and stationary business, H M Paul and Son in Bethlehem. Doug worked with his father until 1968 before taking over the business. His son, Brooks, worked with him for six years until Doug sold the business in 1980.

Doug and Elise Bandekow Paul were married September 20, 1947 in South Orange, NJ where Elise was born. Doug and Elise lived in Bethlehem and spent summers in Pt Pleasant, NJ and Stag Lake in Andover, NJ. They had five children: Rick, Brooks, Kent, Susan and Doug. Doug and Elise took great joy in visiting their children and grandchildren in Vermont, Colorado and Wyoming and all of us enjoyed pilgrimages to Stag and the Jersey Shore visiting Dad and Mom.

Doug was an avid golfer throughout his life and without fail talked about golf every day of his life. He was a member of Saucon Valley Country Club for many years participating in many club tournaments. He was also an avid squash player in his younger years winning several club championships. Doug was the president of the Lehigh University Alumni Class of 1940 for over 60 years and was a long time Rotarian.

He leaves his loving wife of 67 years, Elise Bandekow Paul. He will be missed by his children and their spouses: Rick and Marilyn Paul of Jackson, WY; Brooks and Carolyn Paul of Lafayette, CO; and Doug and Linda Paul of Bridgewater, NJ; Kent Paul and Susan Paul. He leaves five grandchildren Emily Paul, Blake Paul, Douglas Paul, Robert Paul, Alexandra Paul and two step-grandchildren, Gavin Jones and Eric Stunkel.
