Frederick Michael Gallagher, age 83, of Palm Harbor, Florida, formerly of Allamuchy, NJ and Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, died Tuesday, May 2, 2017 at home surrounded by his family. Fred was born March 8, 1934 in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. He is the son of the late Michael W. and Harriet (Checkett) Gallagher. Fred was predeceased by his wife, Sarah, sisters; Mary DeMartini, Eleanor Mazza, Monica Emanuele, and baby brother, Dennis Patrick Gallagher. He is survived by his daughters, Mary Gallagher and Kathleen Jaye and her husband David, 1 granddaughter, Grace; his brother Michael Gallagher and numerous nieces and nephews.
Fred had a distinguished 47 year career as an institutional investment management professional. In 1952, he began his career in the Trust Department of Chemical Bank where he rose to Senior Investment Officer. Fred was a Corporate Officer and Investment Officer with the Atlantic Richfield Company, the Director of Pension Investment Management at Bristol-Myers, the Senior Vice President and Chief Investment Officer of the Summit Trust Company, a Managing Director of Equitable Capital Management, and a Senior Vice President, Equity Investment at Continental Asset Management. He retired as a Senior Vice President of Mutual of America Capital Management in 1999.
Fred was a graduate of Brooklyn College, with a BA in Economics and Finance and studied at the NYU Graduate School of Business. He was a member of the New York Society of Security Analysts, a founding member of the Pension Sponsor Group NYC, and served on the Investments and Executive Committees of the NJ Bankers Association. He was on the Board of Directors of Centre Engineering Corporation and The New Jersey Ballet Company. He was a frequent speaker at investment industry conferences and was published in industry periodicals.
Fred was a devoted husband and father. He loved spending time with his granddaughter, Grace, who was the light of his life. In 1968, he bought the very first lot in the new development of Panther Valley and became the first homeowner. In June 1969, Fred became the first member of Panther Valley Golf and Country Club where he was on the Board of Trustees serving on the Golf Committee, Chairman of the Green and Grounds Committee, the Membership Committee, and the Board Nominating Committee. Fred was also the Editor and Publisher of "The Allamuchy Times, “established in 1970 as the first newsletter for Panther Valley residents.
An avid outdoorsman, Fred greatly enjoyed fly fishing, hiking, skiing, golf, and nature. He taught himself how to hand tie flies made of feathers for trout fishing which he & his brother sold to the original Abercrombie & Fitch when it was a sporting goods store. In his youth, he was a Boy Scout, and won a writing contest in 1946 where he earned the honor of being sworn in by Mayor O'Dwyer as New York City's 425,000th Boy Scout at the Waldorf Astoria. He loved museums, art, photography, history, Native American art, Colonial Williamsburg, and travel. He excelled at trivia and loved old movies. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
The funeral Mass will be held on Friday, May 5th, 12 noon at St. Mary’s Church of the Assumption R.C. Church, 305 High Street, Hackettstown, N.J. with Father David Pekola officiating. Burial will be in Good Shepherd Cemetery, Andover, NJ
following services.
Visitation hours will be 10am-12pm Friday May 5th at Cochran Funeral Home, 905 High Street, Hackettstown, NJ.

Mary and Kathy, I did not have the honor of knowing your Dad but have had the pleasure of knowing the incredible legacy he has left behind in you two. I'm sure he will be dearly missed. Please know that you will be in my thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

Mary and Family I am so sorry to hear about your Dad. Reading his obituary told me a lot about him and what an accomplished man he was. I am so sorry I can not attend the funeral. My thoughts and prayers are with you.
