David J.  Atkinson, D.D.S.

Dr. David J. Atkinson of Hackettstown NJ died peacefully at home after a long illness on Friday, December
27, 2019.
Born on July 4, 1935 he was the son of Dr Willam T. and Florence (Kennedy) Atkinson. Raised in Caldwell
NJ David was an athlete and outdoorsman active in the Boy Scouts becoming an Eagle Scout in 1952.
He followed his father into the field of dentistry graduating for the St. Louis University College of
Dentistry in 1959, practicing in Chatham and Madison NJ for 38 years. He continued a long tradition of
service, commissioned in the US Army in 1960 and serving until 1968, retiring as a Captain.
In 1962 he married Maureen C. Sherwin his wife of 57 years. They settled in Stirling NJ and raised six
children, supporting them in their various activities especially as 4-H leaders in the 1970s and 80s. David
also served several terms on the Passaic (now Long Hill) Township School Board.
David retired in 1997 and he and Maureen moved to Hackettstown NJ. Always a sucker for another
community meeting, he served on the local condo association board.
They joined the St. Luke Parish in
Long Valley where David was a lector for many years especially at the very early Sunday services.
In retirement David continued to learn new things, completing a Pharmacy Tech certificate and working
part time for a pharmaceutical marketing firm. He loved to read history and was an early adopter of
technology, keeping form letters to his local legislators on hand to chime in on issues of concern. He and
Maureen shared a passion for testing new recipes, and following the exploits of their children and
David is survived by his wife Maureen, children Daniel J. and Penny (Crawford) Atkinson of Columbia City
IN, Margaret E. Atkinson and Alec Muller of Brattleboro VT, John D. Atkinson of Panther Valley NJ,
Thomas E. Atkinson of Cranford NJ, David P. Atkinson of West Orange NJ, Mark J. Atkinson and Hannah
Warren of Abington MA, grandchildren Kelsey (Atkinson) Willingham and Meghan Willingham of Chicago
IL, Drew Atkinson of Seattle WA, Liam and Jackson Warren, Abington MA, Phelan D. Muller of Brattleboro
VT, two delightful great grandchildren Rowen and Elizabeth, his sister Barbara (Atkinson) Parker and Dr.
John Parker of Davis CA and many nieces and nephews.

A visitation and memorial service will take place at St Luke Parish, 265 West Mill Street, Long Valley, NJ 07853, on Saturday, January 18, 2020 from 1:00 - 1:30 PM with Father Owen Moran officiating.  Following the services the family will gather in the Church Community  Center for a repast.
