Maureen C. Atkinson

Maureen C. (Sherwin) Atkinson of Hackettstown NJ died peacefully at home after a long illness on Friday, January 3, 2020.

Born on May 31, 1936 she was the daughter of Lad P. and Margaret (Cunningham) Sherwin. She was raised predominantly in Chicago’s South side, which remained the city of her heart.

In 1958 she graduated from the College of St. Teresa of Winona MN with a nursing degree and afterwards spent some time at the formation house of the Maryknoll Sisters before deciding her path lay outside the sisterhood. She obtained a Master’s of Science in Nursing from the University of Minnesota in 1960 and began her career at St Mary’s Hospital/Mayo Clinic in Rochester MN.

The wife of a grateful patient introduced Maureen to a nice young Army Captain, David Atkinson, who turned out to be the love of her life. The two were married in 1962. They settled in Stirling NJ and raised six children, supporting them in their various activities especially as 4-H leaders in the 1970s and 80s.

Her longest service was in the Oncology Department of Overlook Hospital in Summit NJ, where she advocated for new policies on pain management for cancer patients. Her expertise there informed her own choices as she battled breast cancer over the last 30 years of her life with grace and determination.

Maureen and David retired and moved to Hackettstown where she enjoyed testing new recipes, and the frequent visits of her children and especially grandchildren who were the delight of her life.

Maureen’s Catholic faith was a cornerstone of her character. She and David were active members of St. Luke Parish in Long Valley for more than 20 years. The friendship of that parish family sustained her in the last year of her life.

Rev. Dr. Thomas Armour

Dr. Thomas P. Armour, 84, a former Pastor at Gethsemane Lutheran Church in Hackettstown, New Jersey, died 15 June at Avow Hospice in Naples, Florida following a lengthy illness. A guide for his life’s work can be found in a New Testament verse from the Gospel of John, Chapter 15: I am the vine, ye are the branches; He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit; for without me ye can do nothing. Reverend Armour was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1930. He graduated from Concordia Junior College in Milwaukee, served a two year vicarage assignment there, moving on to graduate from the Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod’s Concordia Seminary, St. Louis in 1956. He married Lois Froehlich shortly thereafter. He served as a teacher, basketball and swimming coach at Concordia College in Milwaukee beginning in 1956. In January 1957 he was ordained and served as a Sunday Assistant Pastor at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin in addition to his assignment at Concordia College. In August 1959 he accepted a call to Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Lawrence Township, New Jersey and was instrumental in helping foster continued growth in the venerable congregation. Under Pastor Armour’s guiding hand the congregation grew and moved services from the local middle school to a new church building and fellowship hall on Princeton Pike. In 1964, Pastor Armour accepted a call from Elm Grove Evangelical Lutheran Church in Elm Grove, Wisconsin; a much larger congregation with a parochial school. There he served as an Assistant to the Pastor. In the fall of 1966, Pastor Armour received a call to Gethsemane Lutheran Church in Hackettstown, New Jersey. Gethsemane had been without a Pastor for a lengthy period. The family returned to New Jersey and Pastor Armour began his ministry at Gethsemane in January of 1967, a ministry that would continue for over 31 years. While at Gethsemane, Pastor Armour was elected to the Hackettstown Board of Education, serving for 14 years. He served several terms as District Vice President for the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod, Atlantic District; and for three years was a Pastoral Assistant to the Atlantic District Lutheran Layman’s League. In 1995, he earned his Doctor of Ministry degree from Drew University in Madison, New Jersey. His dissertation was titled "Revitalizing the Role of the Laity in the Worship Life of the Church." In 1975, he was appointed to the Board of Trustees for the Mill Neck Family of Organizations, and served for 40 years in various capacities including Board President. The Mill Neck Family of Organizations, founded by the Lutheran Friends of the Deaf, works to enhance the quality of life for people who are Deaf, or who have other special communication needs, through excellence in individually designed educational, vocational or spiritual programs and services. Mill Neck Manor Lutheran School for the Deaf, operates on the former Lillian Sefton Dodge estate located at Mill Neck in Nassau County, New York. Pastor Armour’s service to others continued in retirement as the Director of Senior Ministry at Zion Lutheran Church in Fort Myers, Florida for another 10 years. Formerly a resident of West Hartford, CT and Newton, MA, he was born on January 19, 1952 in Beirut, Lebanon to the late Nasri and Salwa Abourizk. Nick earned a BS (double major biology & chemistry) from the American University of Beirut (AUB) & was also a graduate of the Faculty of the School of Medicine at AUB. He completed an internship & residency in Internal Medicine, also serving as Chief Resident in Internal Medicine at the AUB Medical Center.  Nick arrived in Boston to complete a Fellowship in Diabetes & Metabolism at Joslin Clinic, Joslin Diabetes Center & New England Deaconess Hospital in conjunction with a Research Fellowship in Diabetes & Endocrinology at Harvard Medical School & Brigham and Women’s Hospital. After a brief stint as Attending Physician at AUBMC, he spent over 22 years as the Director of the Diabetes Care Center at Saint Francis Hospital & Medical Center (SFHMC) in Hartford, also taking on the responsibilities of the Section Chief of Diabetes & Endocrinology for the majority of that time, with an appointment as Professor of Clinical Medicine at the University Of Connecticut (UCONN) School Of Medicine. The capstone of his career was returning to Boston to work for Partners Health Care with double appointments as Chief, Division of Endocrinology & Diabetes at Newton-Wellesley Hospital & Senior Physician, Diabetes Center at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH).
Nick was Board Certified in Internal Medicine as well as Endocrinology and Metabolism & also was a Fellow of the American College of Physicians. He thrived on the variety of work that his professional appointments provided in the realms of administration, clinical practice, research & teaching the next generation of physicians. Major research interests included developing & studying a novel triangular model of diabetes care & its outcomes; heterogeneity of Type 2 Diabetes; discovery of Hemoglobin Saint Francis, a new B-chain hemoglobin variant; atypical diabetes in African-Americans; & outcomes of intensive insulin therapy for inpatient diabetics. Nick’s findings & observations resulted in a professional biography of over 50 publications including original articles, abstracts, and editorials in such prestigious journals as Diabetes Care and Endocrine Practice. He authored a chapter in Kozak’s Clinical Diabetes Mellitus & was very proud to be invited to be a contributor to an edition of the seminal reference book Joslin’s Diabetes Mellitus. Even with all the professional achievements, Nick always said the best days of his life were his wedding day, the days his two sons were born, and the day he became an American Citizen. He was a modern-day Renaissance man who loved reading literature; watching movies & theatre productions; discussing politics & history; getting inspiration for cooking from the Food Channel; listening to jazz; learning about & enjoying wine; working in the yard; completing the NYTimes crossword puzzle in ink; & napping on Saturday afternoons. He greatly enjoyed travel & loved exploring new places with his family in locales from Sedona, AZ to Paris.
