Rev. Roy W. Wagoner

Reverend Roy Walter Wagoner, 89, passed away peacefully on December 2, 2017 at Heath Village in Hackettstown, NJ. He was born to the late Peter and Jesse (Vander Wende) Wagoner on November 3, 1928 in Rochelle Park, NJ, graduated from Hackensack High School, and served with the US Army in Korea. He graduated from Central College in Pella, Iowa and married Geraldine Vander Pol.
He received his Master of Divinity degree from New Brunswick Theological Seminary and his Master’s Degree in Psychological Services from Columbia University. Roy served Dutch Reformed churches in Poughkeepsie, NY, Fair Lawn, NJ and West New York, NJ from 1956 to 1971. Roy was a leader. He was one of the originators of Focus ’71, which succeeded in alerting the citizenry of West New York to the fear of becoming an amoral society. He also served as a Chaplain for a West New York Fire Department. He was the Executive Director of The Reformed Church Home and Ministries to the Aging from 1971 until he retired in 1989. He was Past President of the NJ Association of Non-Profit Homes for the Aging. Roy served the Reformed Church in America for 33 years and his ministry enriched the lives of countless individuals by his Christian love, care and concern and his administrative skills. Roy was athletic and had many talents, including carpentry skills. He built a cottage for his family near Lake George in Silver Bay, NY in the 1960’s, doing much of the work himself. He loved to play tennis, golf, water and snow ski, sail and travel. He also loved dogs.
Roy married Jean DeRitter in 1992. She predeceased him in 2013.
Survivors include his two children, Joel Wagoner and his wife, Stephanie Wagoner and her husband, his two grandchildren and many extended relatives.

My condolences to all of Roy's family.I have had the privilege of visiting with Roy for a little over a year. I always enjoyed my visits with this kind, understanding, spiritual, gentle soul.
