Alden P. Abbot

Alden P. Abbot, age 90, of Hackettstown, NJ died Sunday, January 22, 2012 at Hackettstown Community Hospital, Hackettstown, N.J. Alden was born March 13, 1921 in New York City, NY. He is the son of the late Alfred E. and the late Florence (Peek) Abbot. He was married to the late Harriet Francisco Abbot for 58 years, she predeceased him in 2008.

In the early 1950’s, Mr. Abbot worked at the RCA Victor Division in Harrison, NJ where he worked on the team developing color television tubes and microwave devices, then at Bell Laboratories in Murray Hill, NJ. He later spent most of his career at the Singer Company in Little Falls, NJ as Administrator to the Director of Digital Computer Development. Mr. Abbot retired in 1980 from TRW as the Material Product Manager.

He served in the Army Air Corps, Eastern Flying Training Command from 1942 – 1947 as a B-17 aircraft and instrument mechanic, flight engineer, aircraft engine instructor and attended the Wright Factory and Eclipse-Pioneer Service Schools.

He is survived by his 3 sons: Edward and his wife Jill Abbot, Andrew and his wife Amy Abbot, andThomas Abbot , one daughter: Jean and her husband Bruce Luddy, 2 granddaughters: Sara and her husband Mitch Mullins; Kelly Abbot, 2 grandsons: Daniel Luddy and Edward Abbot, Jr., 1 great grandson: Andrew Mullins

A graveside service will be held 11:00 am on Wednesday, January 25 at Mount Hebron Cemetery, 851 Valley Road, Montclair, NJ with Pastor Paul Voltmer officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Memorial Donations can be made to Chatham Railraod Museum in memory of Alden Abbott, Chatham Town Office, 549 Main Street, Chatham, NJ 02633.

During their retirement to Chatham, Mr. Abbot was for many years, the curator of the Chatham Railroad Museum, where he was largely responsible for the restoration of the 1910 New York Central caboose which now bears a plaque acknowledging his contribution and dedication to the museum.
