Ganter, Barbara Stein June 20, 1930 - August 22, 2021

Barbara Stein Ganter passed away peacefully at home in Hampstead, NC on August 22, 2021 surrounded by her loving family. Formerly of Basking Ridge, NJ and Marco Island, FL, she was 91 years old. Barbara was born on June 20, 1930 in Union, New Jersey, the daughter of the late Herbert John Stein and Eleanor Williams Stein.

She grew up in Union, graduated in 1948 from Union High School, and went on to study art at Pratt Institute in New York, NY and Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia. She worked as a Commercial Artist in New York and New Jersey and although she stopped working professionally, her creativity and artistic sense always remained an important part of her life.

On May 5, 1952, Barbara married her high school sweetheart Frederick A. Ganter at the Presbyterian Church, Cranford, NJ. Together they raised five girls in Basking Ridge, NJ and later retired to Marco Island, Florida and Hampstead, NC. She and Fred were long time members of the Presbyterian Church in Basking Ridge where Barbara was a Sunday school teacher and a served as a deacon. After moving to Marco Island, FL they were active in the United Church at Marco Island where Barbara was a regular volunteer at the church thrift shop. Barbara and Fred loved to travel and saw the world with many friends and family members. Barbara was also an avid golfer and was, at one time, the ladies club champion at Canoe Brook Country Club. Barbara will be remembered most for her love of family, her faith, her sense of humor and infectious smile, and her spontaneous love of connecting with people of all types and backgrounds. She leaves a long list of friends and acquaintances, each of whom she made to feel special.

She is predeceased by her husband, Frederick Ganter and son-in-law Theodore Storer; survived by daughters Ellen Koup and her husband Robert, Jane Storer, Ann Quade, Christine Jones and her husband Christopher and Sarah Hess and her husband Kurt; Grandchildren, Joshua F. Ganter, Tyrus M. Quade, Sean W. Quade, Caitlin J. Curtis, Abigail J. Gutowski , Benjamin T. Jones, Nicholas M. Koup, Lucy B. Koup, Delia E. Storer, Maxwell R. Hess, Olivia B. Hess and Madeline J. Hess. 7 great grandchildren: Aaron Diaz, Mia J. Ganter, Julian W. Quade, Hazel E. Curtis, Tripp Z. Gutowski, Ian F. Gutowski and Finley R. Koup. She is also survived by her brother John H. Stein, his wife Valerie and their three sons, David, Peter and Matthew Stein.

A graveside service and internment for both Barbara and Frederick Ganter will be at 11:30 am on September 11, 2021 at the Basking Ridge Presbyterian Church, Basking Ridge, NJ, 08920

    I’m sending my sincere condolences to you all. I am very grateful to have known Barbara and Fred in basking ridge. Barbara really introduced me to berta place and brpc. She became our “barbara through the woods” backyard neighbor whose visits were always enjoyed. Having raised 5 daughters she certainly helped me raise 1. I have very happy memories of these times. May they Rest In Peace.

    I loved hearing her stories about her girls & them being the reason her hair was white. She loved her family more than anything and I am so sorry for y’all’s loss. She surely lit up every room she was in.
