James George Butts, 73, of Hackettstown, NJ died on Wednesday, November 3rd, 2021. He passed peacefully, surrounded by his family at Hackettstown Medical Center.
Jim was born on December 29th, 1947 in Pittsburgh, PA. He was the son of the late James E. and Daisy (Binning) Butts. For 36 years, Jim taught middle school math at Readington Middle School before his retirement in 2005. While at Readington, he also coached sports and tutored many students. Post-retirement he taught and tutored math at Centenary University in Hackettstown, NJ.
Jim attended and received his degree at Lock Haven University in Lock Haven, PA. While there, he met his wife Pat in 1968. They later married in Hackettstown, NJ in 1971. They lived in Rosemont, NJ before moving to Hackettstown in 1978. While living in Hackettstown, Jim served on the Hackettstown Board of Education for many years and coached various youth sports. Jim was also a life member of the Hackettstown Fire Department (Vigilant Hook & Ladder Co. #1). He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Hackettstown, where he also served as an ordained elder.
Jim had a love of sports, most notably the teams from his hometown of Pittsburgh. He was famously known for his jokes, puns and humor, bringing laughter to all after earning a PhD in “dad jokes.” Most importantly, he was a dedicated member of his community and a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and brother.
James is survived by his wife of 50 years, Patricia (Beatty) Butts, his three children Craig Butts (Darlene Gilmartin), Tara (Butts) Lynch (Tim Lynch), and Shane Butts (Courtney Dickey), his two grandchildren Henry Butts and Arthur Butts and his sister Margaret May Jobe (Roy). He was predeceased by his parents James and Daisy Butts.
Services will be held at the First Presbyterian Church of Hackettstown, NJ on Sunday, November 7th, 2021 at 2pm (masks required).
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Heaven Sent Nursery School at First Presbyterian Church of Hackettstown, NJ.

My Wife Robin & were very saddened to see of Jim’s passing, and though we knew He had been Ill for awhile, we also know, that it still doesn’t make the sting of Jim’s Passing any easier, nor our words of adequate comfort for you all.
