Lois Ann (Weidler) Slattery passed away on Friday, February 28, 2025, at the age of 91. Born in Middlesex Borough, NJ, Lois lived in various places throughout her life, including Boise, Idaho, and Sebastian, Florida, before settling in Timonium, MD, in 2010. In 2019, she returned to New Jersey, where she resided until her passing.
Lois met her husband, Jim, when she was just 19 at the Jersey shore, and together they built a loving family. Their second child, Jamie, was born with Cerebral Palsy, and Lois became a passionate advocate for disability rights. In a time when little was done for children with disabilities, Lois defied societal norms, raising her daughter with unwavering courage, love, and a determination to break barriers.
She had a successful career in the business world, working as a bookkeeper for not-for-profits, manufacturing companies, and legal offices. She and Jim became part-owners of Teton Machine Company in Payette, Idaho.
In her “retirement” years, Lois prepared taxes for H&R Block as Senior Preparer and Trainer. Lois was also a devoted member of the churches she attended, generously volunteering her time and talents in various areas of ministry. At the age of 78, she even went on a mission trip to Haiti, where her wisdom and compassion touched everyone she served, particularly mothers raising children with disabilities.
A devoted grandmother, Lois cherished time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She was known for her deep love for her family, her fierce advocacy, and the warmth she brought into the lives of everyone she encountered.
Lois was preceded in death by her beloved husband, James Slattery; her daughter, Jamie Slattery; her daughter-in-law, Susan Slattery; her granddaughter, Jennifer Spender; and her siblings, Charles Weidler and Lucille Gaskill.
She is survived by her daughter, Lois Spender (Frank); her son, Edward Slattery; her grandchildren, Frank Spender (Olga), Christopher Slattery (Andrea), Kristel Kirk, Kelli McClelland (Michael), Peter Slattery, and Matthew Slattery; her great-grandchildren, Asia, Alyxandrya, Amoryta, Nicholas, Jennifer, Emily, Samantha, Frank, Audrey, Austin, Harper, Oden, and Quinn; and her great-great-grandchildren, Athena and Grayson.
A funeral service is scheduled for Monday, March 17, 2025 at Trinity United Methodist Church, Hackettstown. Visitation will be in the Rotunda 10:00 – 11:00 am followed by a service in the Sanctuary.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Kennedy Krieger-Slattery Fund, 707 North Broadway, Baltimore, MD 21205, kennedykrieger.org
