John August Geary, 76, passed away on June 3, 2024 at Hackettstown Medical Center in Hackettstown, NJ. John was a longtime resident of Panther Valley in Allamuchy, NJ, and is survived by his wife Judith, son Jordan, and granddaughters, Athena and Tatum.
John was born on August 2, 1947 to John Geary Sr. and Sophie Geary. In addition to his parents, he grew up with his brother Alan in New Jersey, a state where he would reside for the rest of his personal and professional life.
John had a lifelong love for civil engineering and went on to pursue his passion at the Newark College of Engineering, where he received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering in 1969. He subsequently received a Master of Science Degree in Civil Engineering from NJIT in 1977. In recognition of his achievements, John was inducted into Chi Epsilon, the National Civil Engineering Honor Fraternity, and also became a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers.
John went on to become a licensed professional engineer in the states of New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Connecticut and Massachusetts. In 1982, John formed and became the president of The Ceacon Group, Inc., where he was personally involved with every facet of construction engineering and management. Through his hard work, many wonderful projects were completed, including work crucial to the new Tappan Zee Bridge.
In 1979, John married his loving wife Judy, who goes by “Jay” to her friends, and they enjoyed a wonderful life together. They raised their son, Jordan, to whom John was a warm and positive force throughout his entire life. John’s granddaughters, Athena and Tatum nicknamed him “Pop Pop” and were overjoyed every time he entered the room and gave them hugs. John was a loving, fun and kind soul, who impacted all who were fortunate enough to know him. He always made himself available for his family’s gatherings, recitals, and sporting events. He perpetually had a smile, always gave expert advice, and made sure he was there to help anyone who needed it. His favorite teams were the Yankees and Giants, which was a fitting team to support because he truly was a gentle giant in both work and life.
A service to celebrate John’s life will be held on June 29, 2024, at 11am at Good Shepherd Roman Catholic Church, located at 48 Tranquility Rd, Andover, NJ 07821. Speakers at the service will include his son Jordan Geary, Brother-in-law Raymond Stukes, Sister-in-law Lori Derkay, Daughter-in-law Chloe Geary, and Granddaughter Athena Geary. In lieu of a donation, the Geary family kindly requests flowers be sent to Good Shepherd, to represent the natural beauty John so loved. Flowers can be sent on June 28th between 9 am and 1 pm.
John Geary will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. His legacy will live on in the bridges he built, both in steel and in the hearts of those who knew him.
