Idler, Barry J. February 26, 1943 - September 16, 2025

Barry Idler, 82, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on September 16, 2025, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Born on February 26, 1943, in River Forest, Illinois, Barry was the ninth of twelve children of John and Kathryn (Bassi) Idler, both deceased. He is survived by his siblings Martin, Guy, Sally, and Paula, and predeceased by siblings Terry, Patrick, Vincent, Joan, Nancy, and Judy. Barry cherished his large extended family and treasured time spent together at reunions and holiday gatherings.

Barry shared 62 wonderful years of marriage with his beloved wife, Lucie (Rankin) Idler. Together they raised four children: Denise (Russ) Fischer, the late Michelle Dermody, Andrew (Heather) Idler, and Catherine Idler. He was a proud grandfather to Nicholas (Kate) Idler, Ryan, Andrea, and Parker Idler, Natalie Fischer, and Vanessa, Gabriella, and Rebecca Cefaloni, and a delighted great-grandfather to Walker.

Barry enjoyed a long career in the banking industry and later consulted for companies implementing customer billing computer systems. A man of faith, he was a devoted member of the Church of the Assumption in Hackettstown, where he served on the parish council and as a core member of the RCIA program, guiding individuals in learning about the Catholic faith.

Deeply committed to service, Barry was a past president of the Hackettstown Kiwanis Club, a licensed gun instructor teaching safety at a local club, and a mediator for the Warren County Courts.

Barry and Lucie were members of a close-knit circle of friends fondly known as “The Dinner Group.” For over 40 years, they enjoyed cooking, entertaining, and traveling together, from exploring the covered bridges of Madison County, NJ, to road rallies across Northern New Jersey, summer vacations at the Jersey Shore. He enjoyed international trips, including a river cruise from Amsterdam to Budapest and tours of Ireland, Italy and Lebanon.

Barry lived life fully. He earned his pilot’s license, enjoyed sailing, photography, hunting, and fishing, and delighted in making “grandpa jokes” while spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandson.

Visitation will be held at the Cochran Funeral Home, 905 High Street, Hackettstown, NJ 0n Monday, September 22, 2025 from 4-8 pm.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Mary, 302 High Street, Hackettstown, NJ on Tuesday, September 23, 2025 at 11 am with Father Peter Idler officiating.

In keeping with his wishes, Barry will be cremated, and his remains will be laid to rest alongside his beloved daughter Michelle at Pequest Cemetery in Great Meadows, NJ at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, Barry’s family asks that you honor his memory by doing something special for someone in need or by making a donation to your favorite charity.
