Virginia Catherine Mastondrea of Mansfield, New Jersey, passed away October 20th, 2022 of Covid Pneumonia. She was born in Jersey City on March 12th, 1943, to the late Harry Lester Humes and the late Catherine Humes (nee Coleman). She attended St. Aloysius Academy and then went on to attend St. Joseph’s College in Brooklyn, NY, where she earned a Bachelor’s in English Literature. She then went to work for the State of New Jersey, where she was a case worker and later supervisor for the Division of Youth of Family Services. She would spend thirty years working for the Division, rising to the position of Capital Bonds Director. She later went back to school and earned her Master’s in Social Work from Marywood University in Scranton becoming a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. After retiring from the Division, she went to work for Children’s Aid and Family Services where she did home studies and worked with foster families for a number of years.
She was an active member of the community and had been a parishioner at St. Mary’s and St. Anthony’s. She was deeply involved with the Boy Scouts, serving on the Committee of Troop 175 in Port Murray and on the District Committee for the Jenny Jump District of the George Washington Council. She won several awards for her service, including the President’s Award. She helped arrange several international scouting exchanges to Great Britain and Finland. She guided dozens of boys as they earned their Eagle Scout Awards. She was active with Wirehaired Fox Terrier rescue, where she helped save dogs from around the county and rehomed them.
Most importantly, she was the beloved wife of the late Robert P. Mastondrea for over forty-five years. She is survived by her loving son, Christian R. Mastondrea of Hillsborough, NJ and her adoring grandchildren, Amelia C. Mastondrea and Harrison R. Mastondrea. She was known as the most loving and doting of grandmothers. She is also survived by their mother, Amanda C. Mastondrea. Ginny had a very close relationship with her family and is further survived by her brother, Harry L. Humes Jr., her niece Christine Noone and her husband Paul and their children Sean and Patrick, her niece, Peggy Hollenbach and her husband Wade, and their children Justin and Jocelyn Humes, and their children and grandchildren, and her niece Dawn Riggs and her husband John, and her nephew, Billy Neues. She was pre-deceased by her sisters-in-law, Susan Mastondrea and Lorraine Humes, and her nephew, Burt Neues.
Ginny also had a large and wonderful circle of friends that she had known for over fifty year and several young people she had welcomed into her family, particularly Briana and Sophie Schafer and their family who helped take care of her in her later years. She will be missed by all who knew her.
Visitation will be held at the Cochran Funeral home, 905 High Street, Hackettstown, NJ on Sunday October 23, 2022 from 3- 7 pm. A funeral service will be held on Monday October 24, 2022 at 10 am at the funeral home with Father Leopoldo Salvania of Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Mary, Hackettstown, NJ offciating. Cremation will be private.
