Vivian Lois Merboth passed away August 4, 2022 at the Karen Ann Quinlan Home for Hospice in Freedon, NJ following a short illness. Born in the Bronx, NY on October 25, 1935 to Halpin Noel and Marion Mathews, she lived briefly in Teaneck, NJ before moving to Hackettstown in 1961. Nearly 8 years later, she and her husband divorced and she capably rose to the challenges of being a single mom to sons George and Robert Stalter.
Vivian spent her career as a dental assistant for Dr. Al Silver in Hackettstown, where she developed many friendships with her patients. She retired in the late 1980s after a fulfilling career. She helped son George achieve academic success and was very proud when he graduated as valedictorian of the Hackettstown High School Class of 1975. She also supported Robert’s academic success along with his active participation in athletics and other school activities. In the late 1970s, she began a relationship with longtime family friend and neighbor, Howard Merboth. Howard was blessed with three beautiful daughters (Kim, Karen and Keri) from a previous marriage. The two married in 1984 and enjoyed a very happy marriage until Howard’s death in 2005. They were both active in Gethsemane Lutheran Church, of which they were both founding members as well as the Masonic Temple of Hackettstown. Friends and family referred to Vivian and Howard by their pet names, Kitten and Teddy.
Vivian was predeceased by her sister, Doris Jean. She is survived by Doris Jean’s children, William and Debbie Thoms. Vivian is also survived by her sons, George Stalter and Robert Stalter, both of Hackettstown, and her grandsons, Colin Robert Stalter of Conshahocken, PA, and Connor James Stalter of Hackettstown. She deeply loved her grandchildren and cherished her memories of helping to raise them during their younger years and of the pizza parties of recent times.
She will be deeply missed by her family and friends.

August 10, 2022 at 8:46 pmDear Stalter & Merboth Family
My Wife Robin & I were so sorry to hear about the passing of your Mom.
For years ( at least twice a year) She was the Dr. Silber’s right hand, that is the truth.
Dr. Silber was great, and worked alone on much of the Dental work, will your Mom ( I am sure you already knew this) would be the book keeper, make appointments, help make up the fillings, and really do anything Doc needed. I am old enough to remember the sterilizer for the equipment.
Your Mom also had the job of reminding Dr. Silber he had another patient, as we would get to talking & time would quickly pass.
May the LORD Comfort You All as only HE can in these times.
In Christ Alone

I will always remember all the family gatherings we had at our house and yours growing up.
May she rest in peace.
Sending my love to you both.
