Edward Robert Shanahan III, “Eddie”, 42, of Upper Mount Bethel, PA died in a tragic car accident on January 22, 2022.
Ed affected many people in his lifetime. Each person has their own unique story of how Ed left an impression on their life. We take comfort in knowing Ed is at peace surrounded in love and light, playing in the heavenly fields with his late dog Molly.
Ed took pride in his Irish family heritage. He had a passion for animals, photography, meditation, and nature. He was an accomplished fisherman and enjoyed the tranquil water. Anyone who knew Ed, knew that he was always one that could spark up a conversation, making personal connections through storytelling and laughter. Ed found much joy and appreciation in music and the beauty of the world around him.
Ed was a graduate of West Morris Central High School class of 1998, and later attended Warren VoTech and the Cisco Networking Academy.
Most recently, Ed spent many of his days remodeling his home while listening to country music. He enjoyed learning home improvement skills such as plumbing, painting, woodwork, etc. His family was proud of the accomplishments and hobbies he had and the joy he found in doing them.
Ed was born in Hackettstown, NJ and grew up in Long Valley, NJ. As a young man, he lived in Waitsfield, VT and South Carolina and soon after moved to Upper Mount Bethel, PA. He is the first of two beloved children to the late Edward Robert Shanahan Jr. and Margaret (Peggy Hurley) Shanahan of Upper Mount Bethel, PA. Besides his mother, Ed leaves behind his sister and her husband, Colleen and Dave Jones and their three children, Reese, Dean and Lena Jones of Long Valley, NJ. He also leaves behind many other loving family members and friends.
Ed’s smile and sense of humor will be missed greatly. We wish that all will share an act of kindness and help a friend in need in honor of Eddie.
Services will be held on January 27 at Cochran Funeral Home in Hackettstown, NJ. The visitation will be from 11:00 am- 1:30 pm. The service will begin at 1:30 pm. His burial will follow at Pequest Union Cemetery in Great Meadows, NJ.

January 26, 2022 at 3:29 pmThis is heartbreaking. I met Ed over 20 years ago when he lived in VT. We were good friends then and I have many fond (and funny) memories of that time. Then we lost touch we he moved, but last year we reunited via social media and I visited him at his home in August while on a road trip. It was good to catch up with him and he gave my 7 yo son some fishing supplies. He was a good person and I’m really saddened by this news. My heart goes out to his family.
