Smith, Michael J. March 20, 1981 - April 28, 2024

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Michael J. Smith of Frelinghuysen New Jersey, affectionately known as Mike, Mikey, and Schmitty. Michael left this world in the early morning of Sunday, April 28, 2024, peacefully at home in his bed next to his wife. He was a devoted husband, beloved son, adored brother, cherished friend, and esteemed colleague whose presence will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Born on March 20, 1981 in Dover, New Jersey, Michael was a man of exceptional character and unwavering integrity. Throughout his life, he touched the lives of many with his kindness, compassion, and boundless generosity. His warm smile and humorous spirit brightened the lives of those around him, leaving an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Michael was a dedicated professional, excelling in his career of nearly two decades with Huntington National Bank. His passion for his work was evident in everything he did, and his contributions to many charitable events were invaluable.

Above all else, Michael cherished his role as a loving husband to Heather. Theirs was a bond built on love, respect, and unwavering support—a partnership that inspired all who witnessed it. Together, they shared countless precious moments, creating memories that will be treasured forever.

In his free time, Michael enjoyed golfing, cooking, fishing, and hiking with his dog Jackson – finding joy in all of the simple pleasures of life. He approached absolutely everything with enthusiasm and an infectious zest for life… and plenty of jokes.

Michael’s passing leaves an irreplaceable void in the hearts of his family and friends. Yet, while we mourn his loss, we also celebrate the beautiful life he lived and the profound impact he had on all who knew him.  Although cancer ultimately took Michael’s life, he did not allow it to rob him of his joy.  He chose not to suffer for the past year, but instead to greet each day as a beautiful opportunity. May his strength and determination to place happiness above all else continue to inspire loved ones near and far, forever.

Michael was predeceased by his sister Erika Hammonds (Burke Hammonds), with whom he shared a special bond.  He is survived by his loving wife, Heather, his parents, Michael and Karen Smith, sister, Keri Smith-Tracy (Kevin Tracy), sister, Colleen Kazimir (Darren Kazimir), and cherished niece and nephew, Paige Hammonds and Cullen Kazimir.  Michael also leaves behind a host of dear friends and colleagues who will carry his memory in their hearts forever.

A memorial service to honor and celebrate Michael’s life will be held on Wednesday, May 1, 2024, between 4:00 and 8:00 PM at Cochran Funeral Home in Hackettstown, New Jersey. A funeral mass will be held on Thursday, May 2, 2024 at 10:30 AM at Good Shepherd Roman Catholic Church in Andover, New Jersey.  Following mass, Michael will be laid to rest at Pequest Union Cemetery near his dear sister, Erika.  In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to Debbie’s Dream Foundation or Karen Ann Quinlan Hospice.

Michael’s legacy of love, kindness, and compassion will continue to shine brightly, serving as a beacon of hope and inspiration for generations to come. May his soul rest in eternal peace.
