Van Wallendael, Lawrence W. November 7, 1931 - December 4, 2023

Lawrence W. (Larry) Van Wallendael, 92, of Great Meadows, NJ, passed away peacefully on December 4, 2023 at The House of the Good Shepard with his loving family at his side.  Larry was born on November 6, 1931 in Jersey City, NJ to Peter Van Wallendael and Bette Berkowitz Van Wallendael.

Larry proudly served his country in the United States Army as a paratrooper stationed in Germany. After his service he asked a pretty teller in his bank out to lunch. When she accepted, he had to admit he had no money. She went anyway, and so began a love affair lasting to his death. Larry married Nancy Nebel in 1955. They attended and graduated from New York University together. With their 3 children, they moved to Hackettstown in 1968. With Nancy’s help, Larry went on to graduate from Seton Hall Law School. Not only a love story, but a lifelong business partnership, together, Larry and Nancy ran a successful real estate business with offices in Hackettstown and Chester NJ, and then a Mexican restaurant, “Jose’s by the Sea”, in Beach Haven Terrace NJ, until finally retiring in 1997.

In their retirement, Larry and Nancy enjoyed many cruises, built their beautiful home, lovingly named “Buzzard’s Glory”, with Larry particularly enjoying managing his woodland forest and visiting his many friends in the area.

He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Nancy Nebel Van Wallendael, his loving children; Peter and his wife Gail Smith, Laurie Van Wallendael, and Jeffrey Van Wallendael and his wife Karen. He is survived by several grandchildren; Acer Van Wallendael and his wife Beth Ansaldi, Alle Van Wallendael, Megan Lichtenstein and her husband Andrew, and Callie Van Wallendael.

Family and friends may pay their respects on Saturday December 9, 2023 from 3-7:00 PM at Cochran Funeral Home, 905 High Street, Hackettstown, NJ 07840.

I was so very sorry to hear of Mr. VanWallendael’s passing.
He was always someone I loved talking with, kindly frank (I try to be too) and a great conversation.
My Late Mother was able to receive a copy of Mr. VanWallendael’s Chilli recipe, and every time she made she would say “and Chocolate is the surprise ingredient” .
I know my words won’t help ease your pain, but I will be praying the LORD will comfort you as HE alone can.
    GOD Bless
