Dickson, Emerson G. February 22, 1932 - May 14, 2026

Emerson G Dickson, age 94, of Hardwick, NJ died Thursday, May 14, 2026 at home in Hardwick.  Emerson was born February 22, 1932 in Hackettstown, N.J. He is the son of the late Floyd and Grace (Washeim) Dickson. Emerson was also predeceased by his wife Evelyn Smith Dickson.

Emerson attended Hackettstown Grammer School and graduated from Hackettstown High School, June 18, 1950 with honors.

Emerson entered the United States Navy on July 19, 1950 and was sent to Great Lakes Naval Training Station for boot camp. After boot camp he was sent to Osage, Texas to sea commission a ship for active duty. The Korean War, having just started on July 27, 1950. The ship being the USS Patapsco A06-1, an oil and gas tanker. He was chosen to be a quartermaster striker on the bridge. Was then trained to be a fueling Boatswain during fueling operations at sea.

A naval reserve from Staten Island New York taught him all he had to know to be a good quartermaster on the bridge. Was promoted there to the rank of second-class petty officer.

The ship was sent to Sasebo, Japan. It was there loaded with fuel and went to sea to fuel the task force of ships at sea off Korea.

In 1953 while on a short leave, he met the girl of his life, whom he eyed and would be his future wife after his Navy time was up. His last year in the Navy was spent on another tanker, the USS Cacapon AO-52. He also was a fueling Boatswain on the Cacapon.

He was honorably discharged in April 1954 and earned the following Medals:

Navy Good Conduct

National Defense Service Medal

Korean Service Medal

United Nations Service Medal

South Korean Presidential Unit Citation

After Military service he relocated to Hackettstown, NJ where he bought property and built a new home before getting married to his wife Evelyn in June 1956.

He was employed by M&M Mars after retiring from the military. Emerson and Evelyn had four children.

He retired at age 56 after completing 33 years of service at M&M’ Mars. After retiring he and his wife Evelyn relocated to Beaufort, South Carolina.

Emerson was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Hackettstown, New Jersey. Was a deacon for several years. Was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Beaufort, South Carolina. Was an active life member of the Royal Masonic Lodge #242 in Port Royal, South Carolina. Life Member of Harmony Masonic Lodge # 22, Beaufort, South Carolina, also a current member of the Musconetcong Lodge #42 in Budd Lake, New Jersey. Was a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason from the Valley of Charlston, South Carolina. Emerson was a life member of the Korean War Veterans Association.

Emerson and his wife Evelyn were world traveler’s while retired in South Carolina. Emerson always enjoyed traveling, deep sea fishing, local fishing, he also enjoyed reading books on travel, war stories, including many historians.
