Charles “Charlie” L. Barabas Jr., age 82 of Independence Township, New Jersey passed away on June 29, 2026 at Hackettstown Hospital.

 

Charles was born on February 27, 1944 to the late Charles and Eleonore Barabas.  Charlie was quite an outgoing man.  He was kind and generous.  Always willing to give a helping hand.  Charles served his country as a Corporal in the US Marines.  After serving 4 years he transferred to the US Marine Core Reserves in Quantieu, VA.  Upon returning to NJ, he worked for E.R. Barrett as a union roofer and he was a member of Local Union #4.  He also had his own snowplow and roofing business. Charles was a vigilant member of the Hackettstown Fire Department when he moved to Independence Township where he joined the Independence fire Department.  A 52 years life member.  He was a parishioner at St. Peter and Paul Church in Great Meadows, NJ and the Independence Rod and Gun Club.

 

Charles dearly loved his family.  He is survived by his wife of 57 years Sharon, sister, Patricia “Pat” Young, sister in law, Debra and husband John Kelly.  He is also survived by his niece, Ann and husband George Bell, Nephew, Melvin Smith, Nephew, Louis and wife Nickie Gebel, Niece, Lisa Wilks, Niece, Debra Gebel, and many Great Nieces and Nephews. Charles was predeceased in death by his son Michael, and his sister Margaret.

 

Family and friends may pay their respects on Monday, July 6 from 4pm to 8 pm at Cochran Funeral Home, 905 High St. Hackettstown, NJ 07840. The Funeral Mass will be on Tuesday, July 7th 11am at St. Peter’s and Paul Church, 360 US-46, Great Meadows, NJ. 07838. Interment will take place at Pequest Union Cemetery, 30 Cemetery Rd. Great Meadows, NJ.

He will truly be greatly missed by all.
