Mary Alice Barr Luteran, age 87, of White Township, NJ, formerly of Hackettstown, NJ passed away peacefully Friday, July 14, 2023 at Karen Ann Quinlan Home for Hospice, FredonTownship, NJ surrounded by her loving family. Mary was born December 2, 1935 in Corona (Queens), NY to the late John and Margaret (Bronnenkant) Sweeney. In addition to her parents and step-father Edwin Healy, Mary is preceded in death by her daughter, Patricia Ann Barr, her late husband, Owen Barr, her three brothers, John, Robert, and Thomas Sweeney, and a sister, Margaret Sweeney Mannhaupt.
She was previously employed by Dr. Tan, Hackettstown, NJ as a receptionist for 25 years, prior to that she worked at Kinsey Associates also for 25 years. Mary was a member of St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church, Belvidere, NJ and the Prayer Shawl Ministry at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, Sandyston, NJ. She enjoyed spending time with her family, crocheting, the casino, and going to Myrtle Beach. In her later years she liked watching golf, game shows, and netflix.
Mary’s family would like to offer a heartfelt “Thank You” to Dr. Lillian Theune, Dr. Darshan Godkar, as well as all the doctors, nurses and staff of the Hackettstown Medical Center and the Karen Ann Quinlan Home for Hospice for their compassionate and loving care given to their beloved mother.
Mary is survived by her husband: Adam Luteran, her devoted daughters, Mary Flexer and husband Raymond, Kathleen Ascolese and husband Gene, four loving sons, James Barr and wife Jennifer, Owen, Edward and Robert Barr. She was a cherished grandmother to 11 grandchildren, Brian and wife Andrea, Kevin and wife Dana, Katelyn and husband Chris, Edward, Danielle and husband Mike, Owen, Kimber, Sydney and husband Tyler, Savannah, Mary, Nicholas, 10 great grandchildren, and a loved aunt by many nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held 12:00 pm on Wednesday, July 19 at Sts. Peter and Paul Roman Catholic Church, 360 US Hwy 46, Great Meadows, NJ with Father Wayne Varga officiating. Burial will be in Pequest Union Cemetery, Great Meadows following the mass.
