John M. Ahern, our beloved husband, father, and grandfather passed away peacefully Sunday, November 13. We were honored and fortunate to be by his side.
John was born on August 27, 1945 in Syracuse, NY. He graduated from Villanova University in 1967 with a degree in economics. He was a proud alumnus his whole life and followed the Villanova sports teams through thick and thin. From 1967 until 1972 he was a member of the New York National Guard. Following a career in IT marketing, John retired and enjoyed spending as much time as possible with his devoted grandchildren. As well as being an avid golfer and reader, John enjoyed attending sports events especially when his grandchildren were involved. He was curious by nature and had a wealth of knowledge which he loved to share with others.
John was the most kind and generous person to all that knew and loved him. He had loyal and long- lasting friendships that he cherished throughout his life. He charmed the many people that he met as hewent through life and we are all better off having known him. We will all take great comfort in the knowledge that you will be forever with us in our hearts.
John is survived by his loving wife and best friend of 54 years, Mary Ahern. Also, by his four children and their partners that love him fiercely, Sean and Isabel Ahern, Maureen and Doug McDermet, Matthew Ahern and Caroline Shimp, and Kathleen and Jeremy Gaspar. And finally, his adoring and infinitely beloved grandchildren, Danny and Mikey Ahern, Marlie and Elsie McDermet, and Maggie and Nora Gaspar. Lest we forget John’s silent and constant companion, Rocky the beta fish, who brought much joy to his life.
A funeral mass will be held at Good Shepard Roman Catholic Church in Andover, N.J. at 10:00 a.m. on Friday November 18th.
In lieu of flowers please consider making a donation to the American Diabetes Association.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Cochran Funeral Home, 905 High Street, Hackettstown, NJ 07840.
