Anderson, Magnus Douglas September 18, 1936 - October 8, 2022

Magnus Douglas Anderson, age 86, passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 8, 2022.

He was born September 18, 1936 in Englewood, NJ.  He was the son of the late Magnus Dorian Anderson and the late Anna Mae (nee Eisberg) Anderson.  An “Army Brat”, he grew up in various locations from 1942-1951, then settled with his family in Montvale, where he graduated from Park Ridge High School in 1954.

“Doug” worked hard to support his first wife, Carole (nee Klumpp, deceased October 1982) and their family of 5 children, often working 2 jobs (union carpenter, auto mechanic, mason, truck driver, etc…).

He was an elder of the Second Presbyterian Church of Oxford for many years, and Superintendent of Sunday school when his children were young.

Doug was a loyal member of Mansfield F&AM Lodge 36.  He joined in 1950 at age 14, was Master Mason in 1970, and recently earned his 50-year pin.  He was also a proud member of the National Guard from 1954-66.  He was an avid train collector.

In 1991 Doug found love for a second time when he married the former Barbara Lightner. During their 31-year marriage he fulfilled his love of travel, visiting Russia, Estonia, Denmark, and Sweden on a Baltic cruise.  Other trips were to Ireland, Germany, Hawaii, Alaska, Aruba, and the Caribbean Islands.  Extremely proud of his Scottish heritage, he and Barbara returned to Scotland twice.  His two most memorable trips were a glorious transatlantic cruise on the Queen Mary and a trip to Arizona to see his beloved New York Giants beat the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLII on February 3, 2008.  Although he loved travelling during his well-deserved retirement, he always looked forward to coming home to his family and celebrating birthdays, weddings, graduations and Sundays watching football.

Doug is survived by his devoted wife, Barbara, and his loving children Bonnie Ward (Les), Debbie Waldele (Robert), Wendy Emery, daughter-in-law, Valerie Anderson.  He is also survived by step-children, Michelle Lightner and Gregory Lightner.  He is survived by 9 adored grandchildren, Rachel Crane and her husband Mike, Christina DeMartini and her husband Matt, Robert Waldele, Carole Emery, MaryAnne Gilbert and her husband Douglas, Alyssa Anderson, Kayla Anderson, David Shoemaker and his wife Sharon, Melissa Makins and her husband Tyler, and 3 step-grandchildren, Jackson Lightner, Chloe Lightner, and Lucie Amato.  Also survived by 9 cherished great-grandchildren, Anna, Nathaniel, Madelyn, Matthew, Cooper, Bodhi, Braylen, Emery, and Bryce.  Doug is also survived by his sister, Diane Temples, and many nieces and nephews.

Doug was predeceased by his parents and his first wife, in addition he was preceded in death by his son, Christopher Anderson in October 2021, his daughter, Susan Melody Shoemaker in March of 2021 and his son-in-law, Walter Emery in October 2021.

A viewing will be held on Sunday, October 16, 2022 from 2 to 6 p.m. at Cochran Funeral Home, 905 High Street, Hackettstown, NJ.  Funeral service will be held on Monday, October 17, 2022 at 10 am at the funeral home, with Reverend Joicy Becker-Richards officiating.  Burial to follow at George Washington Memorial Cemetery, Paramus, NJ.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in memory of Douglas to St Jude Childrens Research Hospital, Memorial & Honor Program, 501 St Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-1942.

Doug was a Father to many family or not. He would bring his family to the farm in Mahwah. The kids loved to crawl under the fence where the cows were. I told them they would get hurt in there. Doug would appear n said you better listen to her, then wink at me. Out they came.
