Florence Marie (Kemling) Culver, 92, passed away on June 19, 2022, in Barn Hill Care Center in Newton. Born to Herman and Bertha (Gille) Kemling on May 22, 1930, in Hackensack, Florence spent her childhood growing up with her older sister, Lenore, in Carlstadt. She was active in Girl Scouts and served as a counselor in summer camp. After graduating from East Rutherford High School in 1948, Florence went on to attend Rutherford Secretarial School and then Barbizon School in New York. She was employed by the South Bergen Savings and Loan as a teller for many years and took courses at the American Institute of Banking and the American Savings and Loan Institute. She spent her free time with family, traveling with friends, serving as a Girl Scout leader, and singing in her church choir. On May 7, 1966 she married Wesley Culver, and they subsequently built their house in Wood-Ridge to be near family. For 30 years, they shared a common love of history, traveling, classical music, and the antics of their two dachshunds. In 1974 they moved to Blairstown, and later to Heath Village in Hackettstown. Florence lived at House of the Good Shepherd for four and a half years before coming to Barn Hill Care Center in Newton.
Florence was a member of the Presbyterian Churches of Carlstadt, Newton, Schooley’s Mountain, and Highlands. She volunteered in the Red Cross Motor Corps, at Hackettstown Hospital, and at Heath Village, where she served on the resident council, as chairperson of the Friendly Visitors, and hostess for Vespers. She enjoyed working in the gift shop, delivering mail, fitness classes, and Bible study. She was an avid reader, a stock market enthusiast, and took pleasure in cross-stitch, needlepoint, writing letters, and watching PBS and westerns.
Predeceased by her husband, her parents, and her sister, Florence leaves behind her extended loving family: niece, Lorelei, and Kurt Oelschlager, and their children, Erica, Ethan (Stephanie and children, Claire and Bastian), and Susanna (Chris and children, Carter and Myka); niece, Marsha, and Steve Terwilleger, their son, Mark (Holly and children, Harper and Hudson); nephew, Paul, and Kate McGarvey, their children Julie (Kevin and son, Patrick), Kenneth (Tina), and Kiera; nephew, Scott, and Tina, and their children, Gwendolyn and Maxwell.
