On February 17, 2022, Giuseppe Anthony Granata of Long Valley, NJ ascended peacefully in his sleep to his heavenly home at the age of 84. Giuseppe was born June 12th (and 13th, according to him), 1937 in Alia, Palermo, Sicily. From age 10, he worked with his 2 brothers, Francesco and Giocchino, as a field tender on their beautifully biodiverse farm in the mountains. At 25, he immigrated to the United States with his beloved Francesca and a little one on the way for a more fruitful life. Later, in 1969, he began his first business as a landscaper and arborist. He would eventually buy his treasured farm in 1979 which would become widely known as Granata’s Nursery and Christmas Tree Farm which is now survived by his two sons. He added his heart and heritage into all the greenery he cultivated, which also made the food he grew taste that much more delicious. Giuseppe is survived by his loving wife, Francesca. This upcoming July would have marked their 60th wedding anniversary. He is also commemorated by his four children, Anthony (Diane), Concetta (Redouane), Lucia (Joseph) and Joseph (Adeline), in addition to his ten grandchildren: Francesca, Amelia, Aïcha, Veronica, Laila, Joseph, Anthony, Michael, Carmine, and Damiana. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and friend to hundreds. Giuseppe was blessed and delighted to have lived such a long and healthy life, and to bear witness to all of his, his children’s, and grandchildren’s accomplishments.
He had a deep pride for his Sicilian-American heritage and transferred it to each one of us. His gardening, pizza baking, wine making and so much more will continue for decades to come. Giuseppe’s deep voice, infectious laugh, breathtaking song, charming whistle, and divine smile will be cherished by all as an embodiment of his spirit. Visitation hours will be on Monday, February 21, 2022 from 2:00pm to 4:00pm & 6:00pm to 9:00pm at the Cochran Funeral Home, 905 High Street, Hackettstown, NJ, 07840. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Tuesday at Our Lady of the Mountain, Schooley’s Mtn. Road, Schooley’s Mtn., NJ. beginning at 10:45am. Entombment will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, East Hanover, NJ. Online condolences may be offered to the family at www.cochranfuneral.com.

February 20, 2022 at 6:10 pmMy deepest sympathies. I am so sorry to hear about the passing of Giuseppe. He was a great man. He was so hospitable to me when I would come to sit down with him and Francis. He would break out the wine, cheese and and deli sandwiches. I loved listening to his stories. Having clients and friends like Giuseppe has been what kept me going all these years. May you rest in peace.

February 20, 2022 at 10:02 pmA great man who brought his love of family, work, and food to our shores. A success by any standard, bringing his work ethic, raising a wonderful family, and building a business. W recall fondly, chatting with him at the nursery, about anything and everything, while sipping his wonderful wine. . May his family find peace, knowing he is in the arms of the Lord.
