Helen Brady March 5, 1926 - August 6, 2020

Helen Brady passed away peacefully of non-COVID related, natural causes on August 6th at the age of 94.

Born in Weehawken NJ on March 5, 1926 to John and Edith Burton, Helen grew up in Union City, NJ and spent many summer vacations at Budd Lake, NJ.

During WWII, while in high school, Helen met her future husband, Carlton Brady of Bainbridge, Georgia, on a blind date arranged by her cousin when he was on leave from serving on the USS Brooklyn. They married after the war on January 24, 1946.

In 1954, they purchased property in Stephensburg in Washington Township, Morris County, NJ where she and Carlton personally built their own house.

Helen and Carlton adopted three children all of whom were raised in that house. Carlton, a plumber, passed away in 1974 and Helen remained in the house until 1985 when she bought a lot in Blairstown, NJ on which she had a house built. She resided there until 2012 when she moved to Merryheart Assisted Living in Succasunna, NJ.

Before staying at home to raise her children, Helen worked as a bookkeeper. She returned to that profession part time and then full time after Carlton’s passing, working for several companies in Hackettstown and Washington, NJ. In 1995, she made a change to working with handicapped adults at Abilities of Northwest Jersey, a position she found thoroughly enjoyable and fulfilling. She retired in 2010.

Helen was a life-long Seventh Day Adventist, following their teachings to abstain from alcohol and tobacco and was a dedicated vegetarian. A talented crafter, she enjoyed hobbies and crafts of all sorts from painting to pottery to crocheting to knitting and more. She also enjoyed antiques and animals, particularly her cats.

Helen is survived by her three children, four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Helen will be buried alongside her husband in a private graveside ceremony. Arrangements were under the direction of the Cochran Funeral Home, 905 High Street, Hackettstown, NJ 07840.

My sincere condolence to Helen’s 3 children. Your Mother was such a sweet, caring lady. I remember Helen and Carlton from years ago when I was very young. I remember the beautiful home in Stephensburg. I remember the beautiful home in Blairstown. I use to visit her, see her at church but in later years lost contact. I hope to see her when Jesus comes. God be with all of your family. She was so proud of all of you and loved you so much. Sincerely, Fran Temples
