Joan Heléne (Aspdin) Paffendorf was born on April 8, 1925, to William and Claire (Haegedorn) Aspdin at their home in Hasbrouck Heights, NJ, and died on February 20, 2021 at The House of the Good Shepherd, Hackettstown, NJ. Her husband of 56 years, George A. Paffendorf, predeceased her on May 9, 2001. She is survived by her son Major George W. Paffendorf, U.S. Army (Retired) and his wife Nancy (Johns) Paffendorf; her grandson George G. “Jerry” Paffendorf and his wife Mary (Carter); and her granddaughter Devon Pierce Paffendorf and her significant other, Christopher Lewonka.
Joan worked at the American Sawmill Machinery Company in Hackettstown following graduation from high school. She enjoyed lunchtime swims and sometimes returned to work with wet hair. Joan and her husband operated Paffendorf Farms, a 360-acre vegetable farm on Stephens State Park Road, from the time of their marriage in 1945 until 1966.
Joan was a loving grandmother. Jerry and Devon remember many happy times spent together and her support of their endeavors.
Joan was an avid reader and devoured books on a regular basis. She loved to be home and to cook and garden. Her green thumb was evident in the flowers she nourished.
The pandemic of 2020 was difficult. Joan contracted Covid-19 and recovered, a testament to her strength of body and spirit. In the end, complications from congestive heart failure and a very long life took her away.
A memorial service will be scheduled at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of the Cochran Funeral Home, Hackettstown, NJ, www.cochranfuneral.com
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The House of the Good Shepherd, 798 Willow Grove Street, Hackettstown, NJ 07840, or Drakestown Methodist Church, 6 Church Road, Hackettstown, NJ 07840.

February 24, 2021 at 1:02 amGeorge and Nancy
So sorry to hear about your mom. Lots of good memories for George and me fishing and camping by the farm pond and George snowmobiling when he was a teenager. Remember sitting with your folks and George’s parents on their porch and having a lot of good laughs and listening to many good stories abt earlier years on the farm. Truly a generation that will be missed. Your mom always had that great and subtle sense of humor. Our sympathies to your family.

March 4, 2021 at 2:41 pmJoanie and Buddy were family to me.
I’ve known Joanie my whole life and have many, many happy memories of family gatherings, trips to Ocean “Grave”, picnics, birthdays, and in more recent years, trips to Lancaster and the bakery with my dad.
Joanie was classy and down to earth with a great sense of humor. She never had a bad word to say about anyone or anything. I loved listening to her and my dad reminiscing about the area, family, and friends. Their generation cannot be replaced.
I cherish her friendship and will always remember the twinkle in her eyes, her cute throaty giggle, and her unwavering optimism.
I miss her very much.
