Allan L. Johnson of Allamuchy, NJ passed away in a tragic accident Sunday, March 7, 2021. Born and raised in Chicago, IL, Allan, and his family moved to Chatham, NJ in 1974 and Panther Valley in 1996. Allan and his family spent many years enjoying his log cabin on the Delaware River, and his cottage in Cresco, PA.
Graduating Northwestern University with a Master in Business Administration, Allan served as Product Manager for Burry, Division of Quaker Oats, and retiring as a partner with Blessing White, Inc., a Management Consulting firm in Princeton, NJ.
Allan’s many passions included fly casting, fly fishing, fly tying, golfing, bird hunting with his English setter dogs, tennis, biking, playing his guitar, harmonicas, and Native American flute.
Forty years of fly fishing include trout, steelhead, and Atlantic salmon in Canada, Chile, Argentina, Alaska, Russia, New Zealand, and across the U.S. Bonefish in the Florida Keys, Bahamas, Belize, and South Andros Islands, where he hosted many trips. He was a member of the Professional Casters All American team for four consecutive years and won four all-around National Championships as a professional caster. Allan was an American Casting Association Certified Casting Instructor and worked with many students through Allan Johnson’s School of Fly Casting. He also served as a Delaware Fishing Guide. Allan served as a life member of Trout Unlimited, serving as chapter president, National Director, and member of Trout Unlimited Executive Committee. Other memberships included the Federation of Fly Fishers, Henryville Fly Fishers, the American Society for Training and Development, and the Lincoln Park Casting Club.
As a member of the Panther Valley Country Club, Allan achieved five-hole in one golf shots. He was also an Honorary Member of the Natural Golf Hall of Fame.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, Carlene (Guyton) Johnson of Allamuchy, NJ, and his loving son Glenn and wife Caren Johnson and their children Brianna and Ayden, daughter, Laureen Johnson andher children, Jessica and Anthony, a sister Bonnie Johnson, and sister-in-law, Judith Nellis. Allan was very proud of his family and we were so fortunate to have him in our lives.

I have missed Allan since we moved from NJ to Palm Desert, CA back in 2015. But I have many fond memories of our golfing escapades and experiences playing and practicing together at PVCC. The winter putting fun we had at your home trying to perfect our putting strokes was the best of times during those cold wintry days. So be as well as can be expected and hang in there. The few times that I fished with him as his guest at the Henryville Club will always be cherished memories for me. He was a kind and gentle man who loved his fly fishing. I feel blessed to have made his acquaintance and to have shared time on the water with him. My deepest sympathies to his family and made God give you the strength to get through this most difficult of times.

Our first time on the water together was in Lower Michigan followed by trips to Labrador, Idaho, Alaska, British Columbia , and more memorable places. Using his leadership skills Allan was instrumental in forming the OakBrook Chapter of Trout Unlimited in Illinois in 1973. To his credit the chapter has a membership of 1200 members today and is actively and successfully implementing Trout Unlimited’s mission of preserving and protecting the cold water fishery. I am so saddened to learn of Allan’s tragic passing. I knew Allan as the gracious host of our Native American Flute gathering. He was a wonderful source of information and culture, such a helpful patient person. When I lost my son a year ago, Allan was on the phone with helpful thoughts I still draw on today. Allan was also my slack key guitar buddy. I am not a golfer, not a fly fisherman, but I still found Allan to be a rich source of common interests: guitar, uke, flutes, harmonica.
