Jones, Barbara L. January 10, 1931 - February 1, 2026

Date of Funeral

February 16, 2026

Barbara Louise Jones passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, on the morning of Sunday, February 1, 2026 at age 95. She was born January 10, 1931 in Providence, Rhode Island. She was one of two daughters to Wilbur and Alice Wentworth. She and her older sister Charlotte grew up in and around Providence.

Barbara graduated from nursing school in 1952 and subsequently enlisted in the US Air Force as an RN. She was posted to several bases within the US, served for six years and attained the rank of captain. She was quietly proud of her service for the rest of her life.

She met the love of her life, Bruce Jones Sr, on base. They were married June 4, 1960 in Cranston, Rhode Island, and soon after they settled in Casselberry, Florida.

In 1969 Barbara and Bruce Sr moved with their two sons Bruce Jr and Bradford to Setauket, New York and made a new life for themselves, making many friends and joining organizations. Barbara became a full-time mother and raised her boys in a way that only a loving and nurturing mother can. In the mid 1980’s, she went back to nursing and became a highly respected operating room nurse at Brookhaven Hospital in New York, continuing there until the mid-1990’s. Barbara and Bruce Sr spent most of their lives together in Setauket.

Barbara was a sociable person and sought ways to meet new friends. She became part of many groups in both Florida and New York, including bowling leagues, exercise groups, homemaker clubs, and senior citizens groups.

She and Bruce Sr were members of the Elks, she was active in the Caroline Episcopal Church in Setauket, and also volunteered as a den mother. She enjoyed crafts, such as knitting, and had a lifelong love of animals — a love that she passed on to her sons. After retiring, she did volunteer work at local hospitals. She was renowned for her sweet-tooth and especially for the love she had for her Labrador, Barnie.

More than anything else, Barbara was a fully devoted daughter, a deeply loving wife, and a tender warmhearted mother and grandmother who was extremely proud of her family and strove to give them the best. She is, and always will be, very missed.

In addition to her parents, Barbara was preceded in death by her husband Bruce Sr and by her sister Charlotte. She is survived by her older son Bruce Jr and his wife Paula, and by her younger son Brad and his wife Denise. She is also survived by her grandchildren Matt Murphy and wife Katie, Christopher, and Alexander. She loved them greatly and enjoyed watching them grow up.

She is also survived by her caring companions Wendy, Linda, Gracious, and Maria. They treated her with dignity and respect in her final years at her son’s house. Their outstanding care and compassion greatly enriched her life.

A viewing will be held Sunday, February 15, 4pm to 8pm, at Cochran Funeral Home, 905 High Street, Hackettstown, NJ 07840. A burial service will be held the following day, Monday February 16, 1:30pm, at Calverton National Cemetery in Wading River, New York.
