After moving to Hackettstown at the age of five, Lois became a lifelong resident. She graduated from Hackettstown High School and Centenary College, now known as Centenary University.
The pair celebrated 72 years of marriage, deeply rooted in Hackettstown with all their family nearby. In 1960 Lois and Ralph opened the local Ford dealership, Knechel Ford. Lois was the office manager for many years.
Often to be found on her back porch on Reese Ave where she resided for 45 years Lois enjoyed nature watching and was happy to share stories about the deer and birds she saw. She was never happier than when she had family around her.

From the start of her father’s campaign, to him having spade the first shovel of earth, there existed a commitment to the Medical Center. Lois and Ralph, along with their children, participated in the famous bucket brigade to raise funds for the hospital. This involvement continued after the passing of their daughter-in-law with the establishment of the Joan Knechel Cancer Center.
