Lanning, Setsuko May 5, 1931 - December 4, 2024

Date of Funeral

December 9, 2024

Setsuko Lanning died on December 4, 2024.  She was born in Tokyo in 1931 and came to the United States as the wife of Steward Lanning, who predeceased her in 1996 after more than 44 years of marriage.  She was the mother of two daughters, Margaret (Stephen) and Janet (Dale), and son Douglas (Teresa).  She was also the adored grandmother of two grandsons, Harold and Dale, Jr. (Sky).  She was blessed to have great grandchildren, Carey, Daniel, Juliette, and Emerson, and see them flourish.  Her family was the priority in her life and she often said that her happiest moments were those spent with her immediate and extended family.

She worked as a stay-at-home mother for much of her early married life but as her children grew, she sought a job outside of the home.  She landed in the electronics industry and thrived in the corporate environment.

Mrs. Lanning lived in Hackettstown, New Jersey with her husband and family for almost 30 years.  She and her husband retired to their home in Pennsylvania in 1993.  After the death of her husband, she had to adapt to a new life.  She developed an expanded social network that included friends possessing the common interests of world travel, dinners, dancing, and the theater.  She also served as a volunteer for an organization that assisted abused women re-entering the workforce.  It gave her much satisfaction to help others.

Prior to the illnesses that ultimately resulted in her move to an assisted living facility, she was a self-professed workout junkie.  She could be found at her fitness center 4-5 days a week, taking Zumba and aerobics classes and strength training.

She will be remembered by her family as a person who made holiday celebrations special, even though they were not the holidays she grew up knowing.  Although she was a quiet, self-effacing person, she was the strength of the family and the source of its successes and resilience.

The viewing will be held on Sunday, December 8, 2024 at Cochran Funeral Home, 905 High Street Hackettstown, NJ 07840 from 2:00 pm – 6:00 pm.  The funeral service will be held Monday, December 9, 2024 at Spruce Run Evangelical Lutheran Church starting at 11:00am with Pastor Chris Halverson officiating.  The burial will be immediately after the funeral service at Spruce Run Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Spruce Run Evangelical Lutheran Church or to the American Heart Association.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Cochran Funeral Home, 905 High Street, Hackettstown NJ 07840.  Those wishing to leave online condolences may do so at www.cochranfuneral.com
