Laverty, John “Jack” August 18, 1934 - April 11, 2021

John Thomas (Jack) Laverty found his ice floe and drifted off toward the horizon on Sunday, April 11, 2021.

Jack was born in Dover, NJ on August 18, 1934. He was the seventh of eight children in the Francis and Winifred (Cunningham) Laverty clan.

In addition to being the president of his senior class at Dover High School, he led the Tigers on the gridiron, the hardcourt, and the diamond. He continued his football career at Rutgers, playing in the backfield on offense and backing the line on defense. He and his future brother-in-law, Art Robinson, captained the Scarlet Knights their senior season.

While at Rutgers, Jack met Ruth Farrell, whom he wed in 1958. Together, Jack and Ruth raised six children. The family lived in Dover before moving to Hackettstown in 1971. Jack coached at Dover and Roxbury before turning his attention to watching his own kids on the field, on the mat, or on the stage.

Summers were spent camping throughout the northeastern U. S. and Canada. In 1984, Jack and Ruth had a log cabin built in Bridgton, ME; the family enjoys their time there to this day.

Jack taught in the Dover school system before going to Roxbury. He worked as a guidance counselor at Roxbury High School until his retirement in 1989.

Jack enjoyed reading a good mystery, watching football (Go Irish!), chasing the elusive hole-in-one, and spending time with his family. He was a lifelong friend to so many people, and a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents, his son Christopher, his sister Gladys, and his brothers Bill, Harp, Frank, Myles, Dick and Bob. His wife Ruth and his children Robin, JT (Cheryl), Timothy, William (Melissa) and Lynn Ann (John) will continue to share fond memories with his grandchildren Sara, Jack, Kristine, Leah, Mark, Kevin, Liam, Trystam, Ava, Chris and Maia, and great grandchildren Logan and Lily. He is also survived by sisters-in-law Barbara, Helen and Carol, and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank the staff at Ave Care in Newton for their wonderful care in Jack’s final years. In addition, special thanks to Ann Edwards for her loving support of her favorite uncle.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions made in Jack’s memory to Ave Care at Newton, 85½ Trinity Street. Newton, NJ 07860.     Laverty Family, Sorry for your great loss, Jack. Didn’t see Jack often, but he was always personable and smiling. Always supporting his wife, Ruth, and would look at her, lovingly, when I would be with both of them. He was truly talented and active with his children and others in sports. He will be greatly missed by family and friends.

    Memories of Uncle Jack are too many to number. Playing football and basketball in the driveway, camping in Maine, are just a few. You were like a brother to our dad, Robbie. Having Tim as a best friend and roommate in college and visiting Hackettstown and staying with and meeting Mr. and Mrs. Laverty and their beautiful family and the love they shared will always have a special place in my heart.     My sincerest condolescences to the whole Laverty family.
    Whenever I had the opportunity to take part in the wonderful Thanksgiving festivities at Tim’s house in Virginia, I was always looking forward seeing Mr. Laverty. He was always able to make people laugh and smile, in his very kind way. I feel very lucky that I was able to get to know him.

    Wow, to learn of Jack’s passing is quite a jolt. Jack was my classmate all four years at Dover High, class of 1952. A great friend, so many memories. I am so sad. This really hurts. Jack had so many friends who admired and respected him. Ruthie please accept my heartfelt condolences for you and your children.
