Mahal, Joseph P. March 9, 1932 - January 5, 2022

Joseph P. Mahal, age 89, of Hackettstown died Thursday, January 6, 2022 at Hackettstown Regional Medical Center.  Joseph was born March 9, 1932 in Wilkes Barre, PA to the late Joseph and the late Mary (McHugh) Mahal.  In addition to his parents, Joe is preceded in death by his brother, Frank.

Joe served proudly in the US Air Force during the Korean War.  He was previously employed by Hackettstown School District, Hackettstown, NJ as a History Teacher for 34 years before retiring.  In addition, Joe was a Football Coach and a Track and Field Official for the school district.  He was a parishioner of Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Mary, Hackettstown and a member of the American Legion both of Hackettstown.  Most of all Joe enjoyed being a grandfather, always attending their sporting events and cheering them on.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Theresa (Ozgo) Mahal, his loving son, Joseph Mahal and wife Catherine and his four cherished grandchildren, Peter, Joseph, George, and Carly.

Visitation will be held at the Cochran Funeral Home, 905 High Street, Hackettstown, NJ on Wednesday, January 12, 2022 from 10am – 1pm.

The funeral will be held on Wednesday, January 12 at 1 pm at Cochran Funeral Home, 905 High Street, Hackettstown, N.J. with Father Antony Arockiadoss officiating.  Burial will be in Pequest Union Cemetery, Great Meadows following the service.

For those desiring donations may be made to: American Legion, Hackettstown, NJ in memory of Joe.

    Much before our employment in the Hackettstown School District Joe was our teacher. His knowledge and ability to connect with his classes made him a top professional and a model for those who would follow his example. God bless, Joe.

    Mr Mahal was one of my favourite teachers – Problems in American Democracy could ONLY be taught by him.

    For Mrs Mahal, my mom Barbara, thought the world of you and whatever words of condolence I can share would pale in comparison to her. I am so sorry for your loss.

    Our deepest condolences to family and friends. We are very saddened to hear about Joe’s passing. He was a wonderful neighbor and human, looking out for us and helping us since day one we moved to this neighborhood. He will be dearly missed.

    My deepest sympathy to the Mahal family. He was a great teacher and gentlemen of the finest sort. I loved his history classes in high school so much that I actually took one as an elective in my senior year. Over the years I had the pleasure of bumping into him at different events around town and he was always so gracious to my family and I.

    Theresa and family, Joe was my first contact teacher when I came to Hackettstown and he remained a friend until Bob and I moved to Myrtle Beach. He will surely be missed.

    Good memories – from being my track coach, history teacher and then my fellow teacher, Joe lives on in the stories I told our children and now grandchildren. No one could do a better mean face or have a warmer heart. RIP, Joe.
