O’Neill, Jane Quinn September 8, 1945 - April 19, 2022

Jane Quinn O’Neill, died Tuesday, April 19, 2022, at Marywood Heights, in Scranton, Pa., after a short illness. She was 76.

Jane was born September 8, 1945, in Bayonne, N.J., and grew up in Hackettstown, N.J., where she attended St. Mary’s School and graduated from Hackettstown High School in 1963. She attended Marywood College in Scranton, receiving a bachelor’s in elementary education in 1967. While at Marywood College, Jane made the career choice of joining the Immaculate Heart of Mary (IHM) religious order, where she stayed 15 years. While a nun, she was stationed at various locations, including Dubuque, Iowa; Alexandria, Va.; and Pittstown, Pa. Upon her return to Marywood, Jane received her master’s in library science.

Following her years in the convent, Jane decided to pursue a career in business. She went to work for AOPA (Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association) in Frederick, Md., and, in 1987, was recruited to work for Fannie Mae in Washington, D.C. There, Jane rose through the ranks to become director, human resources business partners. She retired from Fannie Mae in 2007 and later relocated back to Scranton, where she went to work for the Sisters of IHM as director of associates. In this role, which she loved, she oversaw all lay ministries among the nuns on the East Coast, often traveling to destinations from Pennsylvania to Florida, retiring at the end of 2021 only when her health prevented her from continuing.

Jane was predeceased by her parents Jane P. O’Neill (nee Quinn) and Cornelius J. O’Neill, Jr. She is survived by her very best friend and caregiver Pat Sheehan; her five siblings Cornelius J. “Tex” O’Neill Ill (Eleanor), her twin Kevin O’Neill (Lenée), James P. O’Neill (Lynn), Regina K. Judge (her late husband Peter), and Eileen H. Carson (John); 11 nieces and nephews and nine great-nieces and -nephews whom she treated like her own children; and a legion of devoted friends.

The family would like to extend its gratitude to the staffs at Regional Hospital and Marywood Heights, both in Scranton, for their tender loving care.

The funeral service will take place at St. Mary’s Church of the Assumption Saturday, April 23, 2022, at 10:30 a.m. Burial will take place at Pequest Cemetery, Great Meadows, N.J., following the service. Visitation will be Friday, April 22, 2022, from 4 to 8 p.m. at Cochran Funeral Home, 905 High Street, Hackettstown, NJ 07840.

Janie and her partner of thirty years Caren were like parents to me when I came to Annapolis from Australia in 2001. She didn’t have any children on paper but she certainly had many who saw her as a loving honourary parent or auntie. She was a wise, kind and honest soul who always chose to see the best in people. Friday night dinners at Caren and Janie’s beautiful home were always the highlight of my week. She taught me that people judge when they are afraid and that our best contributions in life come when we live our truth with integrity, honesty and compassion. I can see her up above with a wine glass in one hand and a raucous smile on her face urging us all onward to be the best people we can be. I will miss you my friend, perhaps now you can travel in spirit to visit Australia! Much love Kathryn

Jane was one of my favorite people at Fannie Mae. I worked with her in Human Resources. She stood by me through a very difficult time at Fannie Mae. I always enjoyed her stories about being a nun, living in Annapolis, taking canoe rides from her house to another co-worker Rick’s house. She had lived through her own adversity and stood by what was right and just and not what was comfortable. I will always have a ton of respect and gratitude for her since her honesty and willingness to come forward had such a positive impact on my personal journey. Rest in peace sister Jane. With the utmost gratitude – you will never be forgotten. 👏👏
