Palmer, M. Millicent “Millie” April 8, 1932 - January 9, 2026

M. Millicent Palmer, “Millie,” 93 of Schooley’s Mountain, NJ passed away peacefully at her home on January 9th, 2026. Born April 8th, 1932, in Trenton New Jersey, she was the wife of
the late Langdon Palmer, and daughter of the late Leigh and Helen Lott.

Growing up, Millicent lived in numerous towns where her mother taught while her father was serving in the Air Force during World War 2. After the war the family settled in Hackettstown, NJ where Millicent attended Hackettstown High School with the class of 1949. She went on to attend Douglass College for Women, (part of Rutgers), majoring in English and minoring in Drama. Upon graduation she worked in New York City doing editing and administrative work for author Frank McNitt.

In 1954 she married the love of her life, Langdon “Don” Palmer. The couple lovingly raised three children and lived in Basking Ridge and Millington, before retiring to the family farm on Schooley’s Mountain. Millie was known for her warm smile and kind, thoughtful ways. She made you feel important.

Millicent was a woman of faith and a regular worshipper at All Saints Episcopal Church in Millington and later, St. Luke’s Episcopal in Gladstone. Over the years she sang in the choir, taught Sunday School, worked on or chaired various committees, was a worship leader and was a lay Eucharistic visitor to shut – ins to offer communion. She shared her faith in quiet ways and enjoyed Bible study and biblical discussions.

Millie loved to sing and act from a young age and was in numerous high school and college theatrical productions. She performed with a summer stock group in South Jersey for two summers. In the seventies she used her lovely voice to record books for the blind. Later she enjoyed performing skits with her women’s club. She greatly enjoyed attending and supporting musical performances by two local groups, Music in the Somerset Hills and Opera Magnifico.

For many years Millicent was an active member and volunteer with the Washington Township Historical Society and with the Long Valley Woman’s Club. She was a wonderful hostess and enjoyed opening her home and lawn to host picnics for many of the groups she was involved with, as well as extended family and friends. She was a voracious reader and always had a bag of library books on hand.

While Millie only used her excellent English and grammar skills professionally for a short time, she found a more creative outlet than just correcting her children’s disappointingly poor spelling. She enjoyed writing personalized poems for special occasions such as birthdays and anniversaries. She just updated her 30 – year – old piece “Rhymes of the Times” in 2024, which poetically outlines 110 years of LV Woman’s Club history.

Beloved by her family, “Mimi” is survived by daughter Jennifer of Schooley’s Mountain; sons Langdon (and wife Ruth) of Fort Washington PA, and Christopher (and wife Sue) of York PA; and by six grandchildren and eight dear great grandchildren. As the last of her generation in her extended family, she will also be missed by her loving nieces and nephews and generations of cousins. In addition to her husband Don, she was predeceased by her dear brother, Bob Lott of Levittown, PA.

A memorial service celebrating her life will be held at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Gladstone, NJ on Saturday, January 31, 2026, at 11:00 am.  A reception will be held at the church following the services.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in her name may be made to: St. Luke’s Episcopal Church (182 Main St, Gladstone, NJ, 07934) stlukesgladstone.org to be used for its music program, or the New Jersey Conservation Foundation (170 Long view Road, Far Hills, NJ 07931). www.njconservation.org/donate-now

When we were first married we were neighbors to Millicent’s parents Dr and Mrs. Leigh Lott. They were so proud of Millicent and her brother Bob. Wonderful people who are not easily replaced in our world today. May you rest in peace with your husband, parents. and in-laws Dr. and Mrs. Eddie Palmer.
