Rogers, John Joseph September 9, 1939 - April 20, 2021

John “Jasz” J. Rogers, 81, Passed on April 20, 2021 at home in Erin NY. He was born September 9, 1939 in Newton NJ, the son of John E. and Tessie (Kaspar)

Rogers.  John graduated Hackettstown NJ High School in 1957, then attended college at NYU graduating with a BA degree in history.

After graduation he traveled in Europe and Russia returning to the United States to live in the woods of the northeast and sporadically help on the muck farms. Jasz became known for having mastered his hunting and trapping skills embracing the life of an outdoorsman. Becoming known for his expertise catching snapping turtles, Jasz deservedly earned his nickname ‘The Turtle Man.’ His wide smile, sense of humor, gift of storytelling, endeared him to many circles of friends. Jasz quickly became a beloved uncle to nieces and nephews who enjoyed giggling with their unique uncle. Jasz was an avid reader of history, health, poetry, along many eclectic topics, and when home for the winters, engaged in a lifetime endeavor of writing his novel. Immersing himself in books and nature is where he loved connecting to his true self.

Jasz is survived by his lifetime partner Barbara Martin of Erin, NY along with his brother Thomas Eugene, his wife Pamela and their children Thomas Rogers (Amy) of Topsham, ME, Deborah Connor ​(Kevin) of Telford, PA, Christine Rogers of Tuscon, AZ, Sherry Deeter (George) of Great Meadows, NJ, George Nykun Heather) of Cheyenne, WY, David

Rogers (Diana) of Great Meadows, NJ, and his brother Richard Rogers, his partner Susan and his children Richard Rogers (Pam) of Blairstown, NJ, Jacqueline Rogers of Allamuchy Township NJ, Pamela Refalko (Rick) of Hackettstown, NJ, Daniel Rogers of Great Meadows, NJ, and Brian Rogers (Jen) of Post Falls, ID.

Graveside memorial service, open to family and friends, to be at Pequest Cemetery, Great Meadows, NJ on Saturday May 1, 2021 at 1:00 PM.  Please bring a chair if desired.

    John and I shared a Latin class at Hackettstown High in 1956. I was a Freshman and he was a senior. He was older, by high school standards, than the rest of us and a lot smarter. He lived an interesting life.
