Sergent, Harold, (Bill) December 13, 1962 - August 14, 2024

Date of Funeral

August 19, 2024

Harold (Bill) W. Sergent, Jr. age 61, of Vienna, NJ passed away at home on Wednesday, August 14, 2024 after a long battle with pancreatic cancer.  Bill was born December 13, 1962 in Morristown, NJ. He is the son of the late Harold W. and the late Betty (Rooks) Sergent, Sr.

Bill was previously employed by Morris County Road Dept., Morristown, NJ as the Superintendent of Roads for exactly 41 years before his retirement on 6/1/24.

Bill grew up in Long Valley, NJ and attended West Morris Central High School.  He was on the high school football team and played Offensive Guard and Defensive Center. When he married Marilyn, they lived in Wharton for 1 year then moved to Hackettstown for 3 years until they finally bought their house in Vienna in 1998.  Bill wanted a lot of property and enjoyed yard work and mowing his lawn. Bill also loved Christmas, and he and his entire family would decorate his house and yard with multiple decorations every year and most of his property was lit up for the season. Throughout the years, Bill and Marilyn fostered and adopted dogs through Mid-Atlantic Basset Hound Rescue, Eleventh Hour Rescue, and Cold Nose Warm Heart. They also adopted several cats and rescued a few from the streets. Bill enjoyed going to breakfast every Saturday and dining out. He was a huge Steeler fan since he was a kid then he got into NASCAR and attended several races throughout the years and enjoyed watching the races on TV with his nephew Alex.  He originally was a Jeff Gordon fan then when Jeff retired he was a fan of Chase Elliott.  He collected NASCAR 1:24 cars and has a very large cabinet on the wall to display them.

Family was very important to Bill. He enjoyed going to his sister’s Lisa’s house for family gatherings and Holidays.

Bill is survived by his devoted wife of 30 years: Marilyn (Troast) Sergent, his two sisters, Tammy Sergent Torres, Lisa Sergent Milelli and husband Joe, a nephew, Alexander Inza, a niece, Amanda Inza and her fiancé Dan, a nephew Joe and his wife Stevie, a nephew Matt, and several fur babies.

Visitation will be Sunday, August 18th from 4:30 – 8:30 pm at Cochran Funeral Home, 905 High Street, Hackettstown, NJ.

The funeral will be held 11:00 am on Monday, August 19th at Highlands Presbyterian Church, 3 Heath Lane, Long Valley, NJ with Pastor Melvin officiating.  Burial will be in Pleasant Grove Union Cemetery, Long Valley, NJ following the services.

Ah, Billy. There are so many memories I have from growing up with you and the Rock Rd gang, all of us doing things we would never have let our kids do! You were always up to doing whatever mischief one of us came up with, and you ALWAYS made us all laugh. Now I have to open those old photo albums, and I’ll be laughing – and crying, and thinking of you. We lost a good one when you left us.

I worked with Bill for many years as a “Night Rider” responding to winter call outs for Morris County Road Dept before retiring myself in 2020. I wish to offer my condolences to Bill’s family and friends at this time.
