Thalia Twaddell, the daughter of Lazaros and Theodosia Kazezidou Lazarides, was born on October 16, 1933 in New York City. A first generation American, she attended New York City Public Schools, Houghton Academy Preparatory and Houghton College in Houghton, NY where she graduated in 1954.
In August 1955, Thalia married William Edward Twaddell (Bill) and they shared a life together for more than 59 years. They started their family and lived in NYC for 11 years. Thalia taught general science in Nanuet Jr. High School, and worked for the Woman’s Division of the United Methodist Church.
The family moved to Wilmington Delaware in 1966, and East Brunswick, NJ in 1973. While in Wilmington, Thalia was a substitute teacher in the Stanton School District where her girls went to school. She loved gardening and outings with her family. She commuted to NYC once a week where she managed 3 apartment buildings for her father until 1985. In 1987 Bill and Thalia moved to Williamsport, PA where Thalia worked part time in the Admissions Office at Williamsport Area Community College and Penn College of Technology until 1997. She also taught adult Sunday School at the Balls Mills United Methodist Church.
Family was always important to Thalia, so in 1997 Bill and Thalia moved to Easton, PA to be closer to their girls and grandson. The adventures they shared during their “golden years” with their grandson were precious times and made memories to last them their lifetime. They attended Epworth United Methodist Church in Bethlehem, PA and for 7 years they hosted and led a small group Bible Study. In 2012 they made their last move to Heath Village Retirement Community in Hackettstown, NJ. where Thalia not only took care of Bill but was actively involved in several activities including the Bells of Heath Hand Bell Choir and Bocce.
Throughout her life, her faith, her smiles, her laughter and her caring touched the lives of so many people. Thalia passed away at home, surrounded by the love of her family, on Monday February 6th 2023. She was pre-deceased by her beloved husband Bill and leaves behind her daughters Kathryn Twaddell, Sharon Twaddell and her musically talented grandson David Grossman.
A viewing will be held on Saturday February 11, 2023 from 10 – 11 am at Trinity United Methodist Church, 213 Main St, Hackettstown, NJ 07840 followed by A Celebration of Life / Service of Remembrance at 11 am. Burial will be in Pequest Union Cemetery, Great Meadows at 1:30pm following the repast at Trinity United Methodist Church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be sent in memory of Thalia to The Bill and Thalia Twaddell Scholarship at Houghton University, One Willard Ave., Houghton, NY 14744 or made online at https://community.houghton.edu/makeagift with a notation of the memorial scholarship.
