VanPatten, Jock April 16, 1946 - December 7, 2022

Jock VanPatten, 76, beloved husband of Cindy, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, December 7, 2022, due to complications during a routine surgery.  Jock was born in Washington, D.C. on April 16, 1946 to Gladys (Stafford) and Ernest VanPatten.

He grew up near Joliet, Illinois and later moved to Rockaway Twp, NJ, where he attended Morris Hills High School. He is a graduate of Fairleigh Dickinson University in Madison, NJ. Jock was a lover of the outdoors and was part owner of Dover Ski & Sport Center. After retiring, he split his time between Swall Meadows, CA and Hackettstown, NJ. He was an avid technical rock climber for more than 40 years and, up until the time of his death, could frequently be found climbing Trad & Sport in New York state’s Shawangunks (“The Gunks”) and the Owens River Gorge in Bishop, CA, among countless other areas through the U.S.

He is survived by his wife Cynthia Ostrowski; his daughters, Marysa VanPatten Dermond of Brick, NJ, and Janine VanPatten of Philadelphia, PA; and his four beloved grandchildren, Troy and Joseph Dermond, and Amara and Declan Kelley.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Jock’s memory may be made to Tunnel2Towers or St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.

Jock was an outstanding human being. His love of the outdoors and nature was contagious. His empathy and love for others reflected his character.
The worst thing I can think of that he did was to cheat at checkers when we were kids and was supposed to be teaching me how to play😀. He was a kind young man then entertaining me… younger girl cousin. His kindness and thoughtfulness carried out his entire life.
Condolences to his loving wife, Cindy, and his children and grandchildren❤️
