Condolences

Robert H. Caldwell “Bobby”, age 71, of Great Meadows, NJ died Tuesday, March 14, 2023 at home. Bobby was born August 15, 1951 in New York, NY to the late Robert and Carolyn (Hunter) Caldwell. In addition to his parents, Bobby was preceded in death by a son, Jude Caldwell.

Bobby was a singer/songwriter best known for his hit single, “What You Won’t Do for Love.” He has penned hit songs for a number of prominent artists in the R&B, POP and Rap genre. Bobby has cherished his fans in the United States, Japan and throughout the globe.

He is survived by his devoted wife: Mary Beth (Roche) Caldwell, his loving daughters, Lauren Cromer and husband Charles, Tessa Chapman and Husband Daniel and step-daughter, Katherine “Katie” Moriarty, a sister, Lisa Caldwell and two grandsons, Tucker Chapman and Jack Cromer.

Visitation will be Monday, March 20 from 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm at Cochran Funeral Home, 905 High Street, Hackettstown, N.J.

Burial will be private.

For those desiring, donations may be made to the Shriner’s Children’s Hospital, 2900 Rocky Point Drive, Tampa, FL 33607 in memory of Bobby Caldwell.

I first seen him in 85 & started a 35 year journey. Had the opportunity to meet him on occasion and was always a gentleman. He was the best performer I ever seen. Mary – Deepest condolences to you and your family. I’ll always remember talking to you and Bobby after a show at Scullers. You were both so kind and patient with this fawning fan. I’d seen Bobby so many times over years, and he’ll remain for me the best all-around musician I ever saw. I saw this man in concert three or four times with friends, and he always put on a first-class performance. I’m sorry I wasn’t able to see him before he stopped touring. Truly one of a kind and an all-around nice man, too. My condolences to Mary and the rest of the Caldwell family.

Bobby, your music held a key place in the music of my life brother. We were just weeks apart in age so I grew up with your music. Rest in eternal peace my friend. Mary, I was so glad to be able to meet you along with our good friends Bruce and Linda Grider at Bobby’s final concert in Las Vegas. He was so sweet and kind to us even though we were very aware he was suffering. God Bless you Mary and know that Bobby is with you always and every day now and he feels no pain. R.I.P.

My sincere condolences to Mr Caldwell’s family. His music has brought countless hours of joy to a young man finding his way in the world across the pond. I first discovered his songwriting through reading the liner notes to the albums Chicago 18 and Chicago 19. I then found his own discography and quickly learned he was a singer in the truest sense of the word – how could one man be so soulful and adept with pop/r’n’b, and yet also have the capacity to croon the American songbook so effortlessly? Personally, his Heart of Mine album will always remain a favourite – pure pop/ballad perfection. I actually bought a signed copy from his website that I will now treasure forever. Bobby and I grew up in Miami playing music together. The first time I saw Bobby and his band play at the Miami Palmetto Jr High cafeteria I was knocked out. We became good friends, played in bands together and shared the same passion for music. Back then Bobby loved the Beatles and he would learn every part note for note on each new album that was released. Years later when I heard Bobby and his band Katmandu with Norman Harris and Bobby Jabo I was again floored by the sound. After Bobby returned to Miami from California we again worked together the the late 70’s in a band called Wolfgang. That is also when we started recording demos for his first album which included “What You Won’t Do For Love”. Bobby grew musically in leaps and bounds and expanded his writing and playing skills from Pop, Rock and R&B to Jazz, Blues and Great American Songbook styles. Now Bobby lives on in a huge body of work he has left us. His music is timeless and as long as people listen to his music Bobby will be immortal. Through over a dozen albums his sound is unmistakable. Every time I hear one of Bobby’s songs on the radio I recognize his voice immediately. He recorded and performed with some of the greatest singers and musicians and has had his music preformed and recorded by some of the greatest singers and musicians. Bobby was a unique talent and was not only one of the best musicians I have ever known but also an inspiration for me and generations to follow. I feel so lucky to have been his friend.

I continuously play my video clips of the last time I saw Bobby in person at the Funky Biscuit in Boca Raton in 2018. I only wish I had more including when I saw him at Club Bene with his big band. Devastated! That’s the word my wife and I will start off with on the passing of the Great, Legendary, Bobby Cauldwell.
Secondly, our sincere and heartfelt condolences go out to Mary Beth and the family, for comfort and peace at this very hurtful time.
Bobby’s immense talent is obvious, as expressed by many people. My wife and I were lucky to have developed a relationship with Bobby and Mary early on.
Over the years he was one of the kindest people that we have ever met. We will miss that infectious smile of his, along with his wonderful sense of humor. We also don’t want to leave out what a kind man he was.
God gave Bobby to us to enjoy. Now God is enjoying his beautiful voice every day. Rest In Peace, Bobby. Sheila and I will always love you, along with so many others.

Mary, my heart breaks for you and your entire family! I was first introduced to Bobby’s beautiful music by my husband Bob Margolis! I immediately fell in love with his voice and music.

I went to first concert with Bob and his brother Don at the college in Centenary. He was magic on that stage.

I saw him many more times in New Hope with Don and met you as well! We could tell it was difficult performing, but he always gave it his all for his fans.

I’m never going to forget any of those performances they hold a very special meaning for me. I understand the loss you and your family have now. He’s now healed and he’s in the band with all the other great’s having some spectacular jam sessions. You’re in my thought and prayers for comfort, peace and healing. God bless and comfort you all!

It is with deep sadness that I learned of your passing. As a 48-year-old Japanese woman, I first heard your music 30 years ago on a television commercial in Japan. I took note of your name in a corner of the screen, but I never got the chance to go to the CD shop to look for your music. I regret that missed opportunity. Last month, I finally found that song on YouTube. It was “Heart of Mine,” and I was so happy to have found it. I listened to it every day. I also found your Twitter account and followed you. When I learned from your family’s tweet that your health was not good, I worried about you. And now, I learn of your passing. I wish I had known about you earlier. I wish you could have come to Japan again.

Your music has touched the hearts of many, and it will continue to do so. You will be missed dearly. May you rest in peace, Bobby Caldwell.

My husband and I have been Bobby Caldwell fans for over 30 years and enjoyed seeing Bobby and enjoying his music at Stanford University’s grove in the early ’90s. I logged online the other morning and Bobby Caldwell was trending and just hearing the news – it broke me way, way down. Mrs. Caldwell, thank you for the updates over the years and months concerning Bobby. Every time you tweeted and asked us to keep him in prayer- I prayed for him and for you as well. It began with What you won’t do for love in vinyl, and progressed through tape, all his cd’s with extras for the car and now iTunes. Always loved discovering additional musical gems on all the albums, Once you give in from August Moon is clear, concise and heartfelt. Game on is just plain exuberant fun.
Bobby was pure genius in music and lyrics. He will be missed.

Today…my heart is full with sadness. To loose such a beautiful person.
I send my deepest Condolences to Bobby’s Family. During this time of great loss. Just knowing the comfort that he is no longer in pain, helps me during this time.
May his beautiful music last for many generations to come.
Bobby, you were definitely one of a kind.
And “Thank You” so much… for your talented service.
You will surely be missed.

Bobby, thank you very much for the music. I love listening to all of your CDs and I was lucky enough to see you on stage twice in Chicago. You were a class act always. I’ll miss you. Rest in peace.

Today was a sad day for me as I learned of Bobby Caldwell’s passing. His “Be My Valentine” album is my all time favorite. What a talented artist. I had the privilege of seeing him perform in NYC in 2007. My condolences to Bobby’s friends and family.

I was so very saddened to hear of Bobby’s passing. His music provided the soundtrack for my early life, and for one of my most significant relationships. He had the voice of an angel, just beautiful. Mary and family, wishing you some peace in the midst of your grief. May all who love and admire Bobby be together again one day, on the other side.

Very saddened with the news of your passing. I live in Seattle, and was at Jazz Alley every time you were here Your talent was perfection.. Talking with you after each show getting pics, & autographs etc. you were so loving and caring. Rest In Peace.
