Cohen, Carol Joan February 5, 1937 - March 20, 2022

Carol Joan Cohen (nee Abramson), 85, passed away on March 20, 2022 in her home in Hackettstown, New Jersey.

Carol was born in New York City and raised in the Washington Heights neighborhood where her father ran a jewelry business. A graduate of the Calhoun School and Hunter College, she began her career as an elementary school teacher in Harlem. Following her marriage to Harry Cohen, who preceded her in death in 1994, she moved to northwest New Jersey, where her husband helped to run a family retail business, and later his own chain of retail stores. She lived in Hackettstown for more than 50 years.

Carol resumed her career when her children reached school age, returning to education as a social worker at Warren Hills Regional High School in Washington Township. She was especially good at developing specialized programs for students with learning disabilities. She was an avid tennis player, hiker and cyclist, as well as a Master Gardener. Her love of adventure took her on many trips throughout her lifetime, from Mexico, France, Italy, Portugal, and Iceland to more far-flung locales like Morocco and Thailand.

She was also a tireless advocate of progressive causes, and she spent much time canvassing for liberal candidates during her retirement. She is survived by a daughter, Deborah L. Cohen (Jay S. Rosenberg) of Chicago; son, Andrew B. Cohen of Hackettstown; sister, Lynn Rosenberg of Brookline, Mass.; and nephews, David Rosenberg of Amsterdam and Daniel Rosenberg of Laos.

The family will hold a private memorial at a later date.
