Detective Douglas Compton, 78 of Hope, NJ formerly of Chester, NJ passed away on September 12, 2021 at his residence.
Doug was born in Rahway, NJ on September 1, 1943. He is the son of the late Louis, Sr. and Ethel Compton.
He was the husband of Irene (Carlson). This past July they celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary. Doug was a graduate of West Side High School in Newark, NJ and later graduated from the Essex County Police Academy in Cedar Grove, NJ being employed by the Irvington Police Department for 25 years, retiring at the rank of Detective. Through his career he received numerous commendations from the police department along with recognition for the business owners within the township. Off-duty Doug found interest in photography of trains (Lehigh Valley), fire trucks and assembling a massive train layout in his basement.
In addition to his devotion and loving wife Irene, Doug is survived by his daughter Michele and his grandson Brogan Wooley, son Douglas, Jr. and his wife Kristin and two granddaughters Kylie and Katie. In addition, his sister May and brother-in-law Waco Delarosa, brother-in-law David and sister-in-law Denise Carlson. Numerous nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased in death by his brothers: Louis, Jr., Jack, Carl, William, Richard, Robert, Thomas and sister Ethel Torchia, Shirley Hother and Betty Selby and granddaughter Courtney Compton.
Friends and family are invited to attend a visitation from 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm on Friday, September 17, 2021, with a celebration of Doug’s Life at 3:00 pm.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Cochran Funeral Home, 95 High Street, Hackettstown, NJ 07840.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to National Alliance of Mental Illness

Doug was always a well liked and respected member of the Irvington Police Department. I always liked him and he would accomplish anything he was asked to do and do it well.
