Timothy J. Costello died Friday, May 20, 2022, at Morristown Memorial Hospital. He was 58.
Tim was born November 17, 1963, in Queens, New York, to the late Joseph and Jane (Carew) Costello.
He graduated from Raritan High School and went to work for Burson-Marsteller in New York City as an accountant for many years. Later, he helped take care of his parents in their older years.
He grew up in Hazlet, where his childhood hijinks became material for oft-told stories. He was vacationing at Cedar Lake in Connecticut with his family and cousins when the letters T-I-M mysteriously vanished from a sign outside the home of the Timmerman family. Not content to merely skateboard down the street, he once hitched a ride on the back of a mail truck—and landed in the hospital.
In his free time, he enjoyed going to the Jersey Shore and deep-water fishing with friends. He was part of a local bowling league and a fantasy football league. He loved to travel and delighted in new experiences from Dollywood to the Swiss Alps (a trip that we recalled ended in surgery). He relished a good pub night—and crying in his beer as a long-suffering and ever-loyal New York Mets and Jets fan. He was a man who loved chicken parmigiana and hated Steely Dan.
Tim was a loving son, sibling and uncle who rarely missed a family gathering and loved making his nieces and nephews laugh. Family photos include pictures of him dressed to do battle with the kids with Nerf guns and wearing a massive Sumo wrestling suit.
He is survived by his sister, Cathy O’Toole, brother Thomas and wife Rose, sister Eileen Obermann and husband Dan, and five nieces and nephews, Kasey, Bill, Luke, Matt and Kelly. They will all deeply miss his big heart and bad jokes.
In lieu of the Viking funeral he requested, the family will have a private service.
