Philip E. Hammel

November 9, 1949 – August 31, 2026

Philip E. Hammel, 76, a lifelong educator, devoted family man, and longtime resident of Hackettstown, New Jersey, passed away peacefully at his home on August 31, 2026.

For more than 40 years, Phil dedicated his life to education. Beginning in 1972, he taught industrial arts and technology education at Hunterdon Central Regional High School in Flemington, where he spent nearly four decades guiding generations of students through hands-on learning, design, and problem-solving. After retiring from Hunterdon Central, Phil continued sharing his knowledge as a visiting instructor in Technological Studies at The College of New Jersey. His many professional honors included being named Teacher of the Year and being recognized as an Outstanding Alumnus by TCNJ’s Technology Education Department.

Faith and service were also important parts of Phil’s life. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, a volunteer firefighter and former Ex-Chief of the Tri-County Fire Company, and a dedicated Boy Scout leader. Phil was also an avid bass fisherman who treasured time spent on the water.

Phil also proudly served his country in the United States Navy during the Vietnam conflict from 1972-1977.

Above all, Phil loved his family deeply. He was loved and respected by all who knew him and will be remembered for his devotion to his family, his commitment to serving others, and the lasting difference he made in his community.

Phil is survived by his loving wife, B.J. Hammel; his son, Scott Hammel and his wife, Patricia; his daughter, Amy Peruyera and her fiancé, Andy Santana; and his three grandchildren, Trenadie Walz, Nicolas Hammel, and Olivia Hammel. He is also survived by his sister, Patricia Minier and her husband, Ken; his sisters-in-law, Birdine Stahl and Barbara Martin; and many beloved nieces, nephews, great-nephews, cousins, and their families.

Phil was predeceased by his parents, Edwin and Dorothy Hammel; his late wife, Susan C. Hammel; and his brother-in-law, Greg Stahl.

A Celebration of Life service will be held on Saturday, October 3, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church, 213 Main Street, Hackettstown, NJ 07840. Burial will follow privately for members of the immediate family.
