Ort, Harvey, J. February 1, 1927 - May 28, 2022

Date of Funeral

June 3, 2022

Harvey J. Ort, Sr. passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, May 28 2022. Harvey was born, raised and passed, on his family farm, Ort Farms.

Harvey was well-known around town as he was involved in so many aspects of life in Long Valley. Harvey was the patriarch of his family business, Ort Farms where he lived and worked his entire life. He prided himself on his work experience on the farm where he watched the business change working alongside 5 generations of his family, from his grandfather, father, sons, grandchildren all the way down to his great grandchildren.  In his time at the farm he expanded the farm from a dairy operation to a wholesale and retail vegetable operation that includes pick your own and homegrown produce.

Harvey lived a very full life he spent his most recent years of retirement doing the things he loved. Harvey enjoyed making trips to Lancaster Pennsylvania where he had many friends in the Amish community, he enjoyed spending the day out there and always ended his trip with a stop at the Shady Maple.

Another hobby of Harvey’s was spending time with his many friends. Together they enjoyed weekly trips to the casino, lunches out and weekends spent at tractor pulls. Harvey was also an avid collector of antique tractors, at one time he owned over 40 of them. His favorites of course, were the John Deere.

Harvey was filled with memories and stories about past times in Long Valley or on the farm. Take a ride through Middle Valley and he could name to you who farmed each property “back in the day”, he spoke of farming in the past, stories of yesteryears in Long Valley and memories of family who had gone before him.  Friends and visitors would be graced with memories from the past that are treasured stories his family and friend hold near.

Harvey instilled important values and all of his family members through his devotion to community service. He served in Long Valley Fire Company as a life member for over 70 years and he was a past member of the Long Valley  First Aid Squad. He also was a bus driver and transportation coordinator for Washington Township School System for over 32 years.

Harvey leaves behind a strong legacy that will continue to thrive through his family. He had a passion for his family and his face would light up when sharing anything about his family. Harvey loved having family picnics and parties, he hosted an annual family reunion with over 150 members in attendance. One of the things Harvey enjoyed seeing the most was watching his family business grow with his children and grandchildren helping, exploring and enjoying the farm. He installed a passion for agriculture in all of his family that continues to grow today.

Harvey is survived by his 11 children,  Bob Barkman, Sandy and husband John Glass, Gladys Stickel and companion Gregory Shaffer, Janie and husband Alan Hoskin, Susan, Rosemary and husband Bob Drake, Jake and wife Gean, Harvey Jr., John and wife Patty, Bill and wife Beth and Wendy. He had 21 grandchildren, 31 great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild. He was predeceased by his wife of 63 years, Edith and his sister Sarah Beam.
