Robert, known as “Bob” by his friends and family, was born on November 22nd, 1926 in Bernardsville, NJ to Percy and Annette (Apgar) Alpaugh. In 1948, he married Betty Swackhammer and raised their two children, Glenn and Sharon in Long Valley, New Jersey.
At age 17, Robert proudly enlisted for the US Navy. From 1944 to 1946, Robert served on the P.T. boats stationed in the Pacific Front. After his military service, Robert founded his own business, “Robert W. Alpaugh and Son Plumbing and Heating,” of which is still in operation, taken over by his son in 2000. This was a memory he always cherished, as was all the time he spent in the woods, hunting and fishing. July 29, 2020 at 1:41 amI’ve only known Bob for 5 years but it feels like I’ve known him forever. I had the honor of being his guardian on the Honor Flight Cleveland to see the WWII monument along with the changing of the guards at the tomb of the unknown. He was so proud to be a Navy Vet and his service on PT 355 “Hells Cargo”. He was a special man with a contagious laugh.
Sharon and Glenn I am so sorry for your loss. I am proud to have had your dad as my friend! I will miss him but treasure the memories I have of our field trips!
