On Friday, July 24, 2020, Robert W. Alpaugh, passed away at age 93.
Robert, known as “Bob” by his friends and family, was born on November 22nd, 1926 in Bernardsville, NJ to Percy and Annette (Apgar) Alpaugh. In 1948, he married Betty Swackhammer and raised their two children, Glenn and Sharon in Long Valley, New Jersey.
At age 17, Robert proudly enlisted for the US Navy. From 1944 to 1946, Robert served on the P.T. boats stationed in the Pacific Front. As a veteran of World War II, Robert received the Victory Medal, the American Theatre Medal, the Philippine Liberation Medal 1 Star, and the Asiatic Pacific Theatre Medal. After his military service, Robert founded his own business, “Robert W. Alpaugh and Son Plumbing and Heating,” of which is still in operation, taken over by his son in 2000. This was the same year Mr. Alpaugh moved to Hickley, Ohio, and lost his wife, Betty, of 52 years. He also worked on the Board of Directors for the Hunterdon County Trust Company Bank for a number of years.
Bob was also an avid lover of baseball and the outdoors. As the captain of his high school’s baseball team, Mr. Alpaugh led his team to the state championship during the 1944 season. This was a memory he always cherished, as was all the time he spent in the woods, hunting and fishing. His love of the outdoors was a part of his life that he proudly passed on to his children and his grandchildren.
He is survived by his son, Glenn Alpaugh and his daughter, Sharon Gilbert. Mr. Alpaugh is also survived by his five grandchildren, Amanda, Kelan, and Jordan Gilbert, as well as, Schuyler and Jack Alpaugh.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Cochran Funeral Home, 905 High Street, Hackettstown NJ 07840. A visitation will be Friday 7-31-2020 from 10am to 11am. Friends and family are welcome to speak and share memories at 11am. Burial will be at Fairmount Cemetery. Those wishing to leave an online condolence may do so at www.cochranfuneral.com

I had the honor of being his guardian on the Honor Flight Cleveland to see the WWII monument along with the changing of the guards at the tomb of the unknown. He was so proud to be a Navy Vet and his service on PT 355 “Hells Cargo”. He was a special man with a contagious laugh.
Sharon and Glenn I am so sorry for your loss. I am proud to have had your dad as my friend! I will miss him but treasure the memories I have of our field trips!
