Leslyn Laura Steele

It is with great sadness that the family of Leslyn Laura Steele, 90, of Allamuchy, announce her passing on Thursday, September 2nd, 2021.
Leslyn was born on March 30,1931 to the late Leslie Milton Steele and Bertha Rose (Nemec) Steele in Jersey City, New Jersey. When Leslyn was a small child the family settled in Leonia, New Jersey. Leslyn thrived in the community and graduated from Leonia High School in 1949. Upon graduation Leslyn enrolled at Wilson College in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania. In March of 1951, Leslyn married the late Harry M. Ash III, originally settling in Ridgewood, New Jersey. She became an active member of the Ridgewood Women’s Club while balancing her role as mother to her growing family. In 1959, the family moved to Westfield, New Jersey where the family expanded further. Leslyn was a devoted mother to their six children having served on the Wilson School Board in Westfield, as a Scout leader, and as a Committee Member at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. Leslyn, an accomplished professional artist, still found time to teach art classes. She was a past
President of the Westfield Art Association and using her talents contributed to the family finances by rendering house portraits for Barrett and Crane Realty of Westfield.
In 1961, the Harry and Leslyn built a summer home for their family in Awosting located on Greenwood Lake, New Jersey. There Leslyn served as President of the Awosting Association Bridge Club, on the committee of the Awosting Yacht Squadron Sailing Reception Committee, organized Progressive Suppers, and served on The Big Tree Committee.
In 1972, the family relocated to Panther Valley in Allamuchy, New Jersey. Continuing her active role, she served as President of the Allamuchy Elementary School PTA, President of the St. James Episcopal Church Ladies Guild and served on numerous school booster committees.
In later years, Leslyn travelled extensively around the country and the world with her companion Samuel Potrock. Leslyn was a member of the Allamuchy Senior Group. She especially enjoyed the monthly trips to the casinos in the Poconos with her good friend Janet Hauschild.
Leslyn was predeceased by her mother and father, Leslie and Bertha Steele, and her sister Audrey Steele Morrison. She is survived by her daughter Marianne Ash Miller and her husband Michael Miller of Toano, Virginia, her son Harry M. Ash IV of Matthews, North Carolina, her daughter Carolyn Ash Gurnowski and her husband Theodore (Ted) Gurnowski of Allamuchy, New Jersey, her son Leslie Steele Ash and his wife Frederica (Fredi) Welles Ash of Vero Beach, Florida, her daughter Kathleen Ash Lange and her husband John (Jack) Lange of Purcellville, Virginia, her son Raymond Ash and his fiancé Diane Bradley of Kennesaw, Georgia, her grandchildren, Gail Miller Fitzharris, Greg Miller, Clay Miller, Elizabeth Lange McWilliams, John Lange, Alexander Lange, Elyse Gurnowski Hull, Sara Ash, Eric Gurnowski, Caroline Lange, Laura Gurnowski Moyle, William Ash, Katherine Lange, Emily Ash, Bruce Gurnowski, Victoria Lange, Christine Ash, Teddy Gurnowski and Daniel Ash and her great-grandchildren Mazie Fitzharris, Conall Fitzharris, Henry McWilliams, Jack Lange, George McWilliams, Hugh McWilliams, Adeline Lange and Luke Moyle.
Leslyn was a force in life and lived life to the fullest. She will be sorely missed by her entire loving family.
