Gerald James Fitzgerald

 Gerald James Fitzgerald, March 9th, 1935 – January 22nd, 2017

(Gerry, GJ, Fitzy)

Gerry was born in Brooklyn, New York on March 9th, 1935 to Agnes Brew and James Fitzgerald. Gerry attended Iona College where he majored in Marketing. Later in life, he used that business training to be one of the rare people to be successful with penny stocks. He worked for various plastic firms over the course of his 50+ years in the industry. His longevity over the years is remarkable as was his skill with people.

He is survived by his children, Beth Giovine, Patrice Scheffler, Gerald Fitzgerald Junior, and 13 grandchildren. His daughter Lynn predeceased him. In his youth, Gerry was an outstanding basketball player for the New York Tuck Tapers. At 6feet5in, he was an imposing figure on the basketball court. He kept in touch with classmates from his grammar school, Our Lady Queen of Martyrs, and very much enjoyed their regular reunions. In his later years, as an athlete he would challenge his children and grandchildren to a short race, which he usually won with great satisfaction. Gerry enjoyed a good laugh, a fine cigar, and most of all retelling the old stories. His children could probably recite the stories-on cue and recall the colorful characters such as Toddy O’Rourke. He was a history buff and was meticulous with detail insisting that our family was Norman not Irish. He also liked to play Ride of the Valkyries at full volume in honor of the Vikings.

Gerry was quite a character. He will be missed.

Matthew Joseph Fraser

Matthew Joseph Fraser, age 19, of Long Valley, NJ died Tuesday, January 17, 2017 at Morristown Memorial Hospital. He was the son of Albert and Mary (D'Alessandro) Fraser.
Matthew was a student at Mount Olive High School and a member of the Best Buddy Program also in Mount Olive, NJ.

In addition to his loving parents he is survived by; a brother, Albert G. Fraser V, his grandparents, Josephine D'Alessandro, Albert G. Fraser, III and wife Carole, his great grandmother, Wanda Keifner, 3 uncles, John J. Fraser, Michael D'Alessandro, and John D'Alessandro.

For those of you who never met him, this is my brother. He was born with two rare chromosomal disorders: 4P Minus and Trisomy 8. This morning, after almost a month long battle in the hospital, he lost. He was no longer able to breathe on his own, along with many other medical issues that kept coming up, so he was taken off the intubation and was allowed to pass peacefully without pain or suffering. When he was born, we were told he would live a maximum of six months. He astoundingly beat the odds and lived to the age of 19. He would have been 20 in May. He was unable to speak, or even do most of the things many of us take for granted. Despite this, he was an inspiration to many of us and taught us a great deal about life, and he especially taught me how to love unconditionally and show compassion and care for others no matter who they were or what they looked like. Matthew, because of his condition and the many things that came with that, was in and out of the hospital many times in his life. By our standards, he had a tough life. Yet, he was one of happiest kids I've met. Despite the adversity he faced, he seemed to still love life and show love for those around him. This brings me to the most important thing he taught me: life can be unbelievably hard, but always appreciate it while it's here, because it's a beautiful thing to have. I love you Matthew, and you will be deeply missed, by myself and many others. Rest In Peace.

A Memorial Service will be held 7:30 pm on Wednesday, January 25 at Cochran Funeral Home, Inc., 905 High Street, Hackettstown, N.J. Cremation was private.  (**Please note the time change of the service to 7:30 pm.)

William F. Faherty Jr.

View Condolences >>

William F. Faherty, Jr., former president of the New Jersey Chamber of Commerce who devoted his life to promoting the state and its interests, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 22, 2012 at his home in Allamuchy, NJ.

Born October 28, 1926 in Trenton, NJ to Anna and William Faherty, Bill was a trailblazing banking executive with First National State Bank of New Jersey, which eventually became Wells Fargo Bank. He started the state’s first government banking department, at that time only the fourth in the nation. He was also key in the passing of a bill permitting statewide banking.

His legacy offers venues that continue to bring enjoyment to millions of people. Bill was instrumental in the development of the Meadowlands, home of his beloved Giants, and the birth of gaming in Atlantic City.

A tireless public servant, Bill was often called on by New Jersey governors. Gov. Richard Hughes appointed him the deputy commissioner of the state’s Department of Banking and Insurance. Gov. Brendan Byrne named him executive director to the private sector for the first New Jersey European Trade Mission to England, France and eventually West Germany. Gov. Tom Kean chose him to be executive director of finance for the Governor’s Management Improvement Plan, a commission comprised of the finest executive talent from New Jersey’s private sector.

Bill was an avid, dependable fundraiser. As chairman of the Governor’s Invitational Tennis Tournament for 35 years, he helped bring in millions of dollars for the Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Foundation, Council on the Arts and other organizations. As trustee of the New Jersey State Police Memorial Association, he helped raise more than $2 million for its museum.

Bill was no stranger to U.S. presidents, either. As a leading state figure, he often had the opportunity to meet presidents, always presenting each with a tie featuring silhouettes of the state of New Jersey. Recipients included presidents Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, George H. Bush, Bill Clinton and George W. Bush. In fact, Bill once estimated that he had handed out nearly 4,000 of these ties to friends, clients and government officials.

During his career he was a member of various boards of directors, including those for the Waterloo Foundation, NJ Delta Dental Service Plan, Hackettstown Community Hospital, Automobile Club of Central/West Jersey, and Growing Stage Theatre. He was also a member of the Battleship New Jersey Commission and the board of trustees for Rutgers Business School, Partnership for a Drug Free NJ and the Drumthwacket Foundation.
